Most Kenyans applying for Australian PR assume that hitting 65 points is the finish line. It is not. The 65-point threshold is merely the floor that lets you submit an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect — the actual queue for invitations is far more competitive. Understanding the real numbers, and where Kenyan applicants specifically gain or lose ground, determines whether your EOI sits in the active pool or gathers dust.

The Points Table — Every Category Explained

The General Skilled Migration (GSM) points test awards points across six categories. Here is what each is worth and how it applies to a typical Kenyan applicant.

Age (maximum 30 points)

The median age of the Kenyan-born population in Australia is 34, which means many applicants are catching the tail end of the 25–32 bracket or have already slipped into the 33–39 band. If you are 32 today, your age points will drop from 30 to 25 the moment you turn 33 — that shift is worth approximately three to five years of additional overseas work experience. Time matters.

English Language Proficiency (maximum 20 points)

This is where Kenyan applicants have a structural advantage that most squander. Kenya's English-medium education system means native fluency, but fluency is not the same as a PTE score of 88 in speaking. The 2025 overhaul of PTE scoring introduced component-specific thresholds that are substantially higher for writing (85) and speaking (88). Many Kenyans who score 90+ in reading find themselves blocked at 80 in speaking because the AI engine penalises the rhythmic Sheng-influenced intonation that sounds perfectly natural to a human ear but registers as inconsistent phrasing in the algorithm.

The 20-point "Superior English" achievement is the single highest-value move available to a Kenyan applicant. It is worth more than having an Australian partner, more than a PhD, and more than eight years of work experience.

Skilled Employment (maximum 20 points)

Only employment in your nominated ANZSCO occupation counts. Many Kenyans have seven or eight years of work history but find that ACS or Engineers Australia only credits three or four years because the earlier roles do not map cleanly to the nominated code, or because the skills assessment deducted two years for the "entry-level requirement."

Qualifications (maximum 20 points)

Bachelor's degrees from the University of Nairobi, JKUAT, and Strathmore University consistently map to AQF Level 7, giving Kenyan graduates the full 15 points. A PhD from a recognised Kenyan institution adds 20.

State and Territory Nomination (5 or 15 points)

The Subclass 190 (state nominated) adds 5 points. The Subclass 491 (regional provisional) adds 15 points. These are not just nice extras — for IT professionals and accountants where the competitive threshold sits at 90–95 points, the 491's 15-point bonus frequently makes the difference between waiting years and receiving an invitation within one round.

The 65-point minimum is misleading. Competitive thresholds by occupation in the 2025–2026 cycle:

For a Kenyan Software Engineer aged 30 with a UoN bachelor's degree and five years of work experience, the starting position looks like this: 30 (age) + 15 (degree) + 10 (5–7 years overseas experience) = 55 points. That applicant cannot even submit an EOI yet. They need English points (10 or 20) plus either state nomination (5 or 15) to reach a viable score.

The Kenyan Scoring Roadmap

The fastest path to a competitive score for most Kenyan applicants is:

1. Sit PTE Academic and target Superior (88 speaking, 85 writing). This adds 20 points and is faster than accumulating years of experience. PTE results arrive within 48 hours from centres including Computer Pride Ltd in Nairobi.
2. Get your skills assessment right. If the assessing body credits fewer years than you expected, you lose points. Understand how ACS or Engineers Australia count experience before lodging.
3. Target state nomination via Subclass 190 or 491. Western Australia is particularly accessible for Kenyan engineers and IT professionals — the WASMOL treats offshore applicants the same as onshore candidates, and WA allocated 10,000 places in the 2024–2025 program year.
4. File your EOI the moment you hit 65 points. The "deemed skilled date" starts from the day your skills assessment is issued, not from when you lodge the EOI. Every month you delay is a month of experience points potentially lost.
