How to Increase Australia PR Points from India: Partner Skills, NAATI, and English

How to Increase Australia PR Points from India: Partner Skills, NAATI, and English

The standard points profile for an Indian IT professional applying for the 189 visa — age 30, B.Tech, 5 years of experience, Proficient English — comes out at roughly 70 to 75 points. The current cut-off for Tier 4 occupations (Software Engineer, Business Analyst, Analyst Programmer) in the 189 pool is 95 to 105 points. That is a gap of 20 to 35 points, and it needs to be closed with precision.

This post covers every lever available to Indian applicants in the 2026 program, ranked by impact and accessibility.

The Starting Point: What a Typical Indian Profile Scores

Before optimizing, benchmark the base profile using the current points test:

Category Criteria Points
Age 25–32 30
English Proficient (PTE 65 / IELTS 7.0) 10
Work experience (overseas) 3 years (after ACS deduction) 5
Australian qualifications None 0
Educational qualifications Bachelor's degree 15
Partner Has competent English only 5
Total 65

This profile is legally eligible but will not receive an invitation at any point in the current program year for Tier 4 occupations. The floor is technically 65 but the functional floor is 95.

Lever 1: Superior English — 10 More Points

The single highest-impact move is upgrading from Proficient to Superior English. The difference is 10 points.

  • Proficient English: PTE 65 in each component, or IELTS 7.0 in each band — earns 10 points
  • Superior English: PTE 79 in each component, or IELTS 8.0 in each band — earns 20 points

For Indian professionals, PTE Academic has become the dominant choice for the 189 pathway. The AI-based scoring removes human examiner variability, and the turnaround for results is 24 to 48 hours. Post the August 2025 scoring update, the component-specific minimums for Superior are: Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, Speaking 88.

Speaking 88 and Writing 85 are the hardest targets. Indian applicants typically score higher in Reading and Listening than in Speaking and Writing. A targeted 6 to 8 week PTE preparation strategy focusing on the Describe Image and Write Essay tasks closes the gap for most candidates. Moving from PTE 65 to PTE 79 is a realistic goal — but it requires a strategy shift, not just more practice.

Lever 2: Partner Skills — 5 or 10 More Points

If you are married or in a de facto relationship, your partner's profile can add up to 10 points.

10 points if your partner:

  • Is under 45 years old
  • Has a positive skills assessment in an occupation on the same occupation list
  • Has at least Competent English (PTE 50 / IELTS 6.0)

5 points if your partner:

  • Has at least Competent English
  • Does not have a skills assessment (or is not in an eligible occupation)

10 points (same as partnered-skilled) if you are a single applicant — the system equalizes single applicants with skilled couples to maintain fairness in the pool.

For Indian IT couples where both partners work in technology: the secondary partner should prioritize getting an ACS assessment done early. The secondary assessment costs AUD 1,498 but adds 5 points relative to having only Competent English — and those 5 points can be the difference between an invitation in one quarterly round versus waiting another three months.

Timing matters: your partner's skills assessment must be positive at the time your EOI is submitted. If your partner's assessment arrives after you submit, you cannot retroactively update the points claim without withdrawing and resubmitting your EOI — which resets your Date of Effect.

Lever 3: NAATI CCL — 5 More Points

The Credentialed Community Language (CCL) test is the most underused points booster in the Indian applicant pool. Passing the test earns 5 points.

The CCL tests your ability to interpret spoken dialogues between English and your community language — Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and Marathi are all available options. The test format is two pre-recorded dialogues of approximately 300 words each. You listen and speak the interpretation aloud, and the recording is assessed by NAATI-trained assessors.

The pass mark is 63 out of 90, with a minimum of 29 out of 45 in each dialogue. For bilingual Indian professionals fluent in Hindi, the language component is accessible. The challenge is the interpretation register — medical, legal, and community services contexts that use specific terminology in both languages.

CCL test fee is AUD 814 (approximately INR 45,000). The test is available monthly for high-demand languages including Hindi. Results are issued within four weeks.

Combined with Superior English and partner skills, NAATI CCL adds 5 points that move a borderline profile into invite range.

Lever 4: Age Band Optimization

The points test awards more points for younger applicants:

Age at time of invitation Points
18 to 24 25
25 to 32 30
33 to 39 25
40 to 44 15

If you are approaching 33 — the age at which your score drops 5 points — and you are otherwise ready to submit an EOI, submit before your birthday. The Date of Effect on your EOI is the date you submit, and points are calculated at the time of invitation, not at the time of EOI submission. This means if you are invited after your birthday, the lower points apply — but submitting your EOI before your birthday maximizes your priority in the queue during the period when your age score is higher.

Lever 5: Work Experience Under the Post-ACS Calculation

Work experience points in the EOI are based on what ACS recognized, not what you actually worked:

ACS-recognized experience Points (overseas)
Less than 3 years 0
3 years 5
5 years 10
8 years 15

Because of year deductions, many Indian applicants with six to eight total years of experience end up with only three to four ACS-recognized years. The path to a higher experience points claim is time — accumulating more post-assessment experience after your Skill Level Met Date.

If your current ACS-recognized experience puts you at three years (5 points), waiting 12 to 24 more months of recognized work may move you to five years (10 points). Whether this is worth it depends on your age band — a 31-year-old may find it worthwhile; a 37-year-old approaching the 40-year bracket should weigh the trade-off.

The Realistic Optimized Profile

An Indian IT professional who executes on these levers can reach:

Category Optimized Points
Age 28 30
English Superior (PTE 79+) 20
Work experience (ACS-recognized, 5 years) Overseas 10
Education Bachelor's degree 15
Partner Skilled, under 45, competent English 10
NAATI CCL Hindi pass 5
Total 90

At 90 points, this profile sits in invite range for Tier 3 occupations (civil engineers, network engineers) and is borderline for Tier 4. Adding the 5-point state nomination bonus from a Subclass 190 brings the effective score to 95 — squarely in the invite range for NSW, Victoria, and South Australia ICT nominations.
