How to Calculate Your Australia PR Points (The Nigerian Professional's Guide)

The Australian points test looks simple on paper — add up your score, submit an EOI, wait for an invitation. The reality is messier, particularly for Nigerian applicants. The points test has a hidden trap that ACS, Engineers Australia, and VETASSESS build into their assessments: the year deduction. It can cut your claimed work experience by 2 to 6 years, which means many Nigerians who calculate 80 points discover their real score is 70 after the assessment comes back.

Here is how to calculate your real score — and how to increase it.

The Points Test Categories

The minimum score to submit an EOI is 65 points. In practice, the minimum score to receive an invitation for a Subclass 189 visa in 2026 is around 90 to 95 points for IT and engineering occupations. For state nominated (190), it runs 80 to 85. For regional (491), 70 to 75 — which is where most Nigerian professionals realistically land on a first attempt.

Age (Up to 30 Points)

Age is your fastest-decaying asset. Every year you spend in the "will think about it" phase is a year that may push you from 30 points to 25. If you are currently 31, the urgency is real.

English Language (Up to 20 Points)

This is the highest-leverage category. Going from Proficient to Superior adds 10 points — the equivalent of 3 additional years of claimed work experience. Nigerian professionals have shifted heavily toward PTE Academic because the AI scoring is consistent regardless of accent, results arrive in 48 hours, and the cost in Naira is lower than IELTS at the British Council.

Nigeria is not counted as a "majority English-speaking country" for Australian migration purposes. You must test regardless of your undergraduate instruction language.

Skilled Employment (Up to 20 Points)

Points are awarded for years of employment in your nominated occupation — but only after your assessing authority's year deduction is applied.

The deduction trap: ACS applies the following deductions from Nigerian IT professionals' work experience totals before points can be claimed:

A Nigerian software engineer with 8 years of experience and a Computer Science degree from a NUC-accredited university has an ICT Major. ACS deducts 2 years. Claimed experience for points: 6 years = 15 points, not 20. That 5-point difference is significant when you are trying to reach 80 points.

Engineers Australia and VETASSESS have similar qualifying period mechanics. Confirm your occupation's deduction before assuming a points total.

Australian Study Requirement (5 Points)

If you have at least one AQF Level 7 or above qualification from an Australian institution, obtained through at least two years of study in Australia, you receive 5 points. Most offshore Nigerian applicants will not have this. Do not plan your strategy around earning this bonus unless you genuinely intend to study in Australia first.

Specialist Education Qualifications (Up to 20 Points)

For Nigerian applicants, a PhD from a recognized Nigerian university assessed as equivalent to an Australian doctorate can contribute 20 points. This is a significant bonus for those who have completed doctoral research.

State or Territory Nomination (5 or 15 Points)

This is where the 491 regional visa wins on pure arithmetic. The 15-point bonus from regional nomination is what makes the pathway accessible for Nigerian applicants who cannot reach 85 points on personal factors alone.

Partner Skills (10 Points)

If your spouse is:

• Aged under 45 at time of invitation
• Has a positive skills assessment in an occupation on the same relevant list
• Has Competent English (IELTS 6.0 / PTE 50 minimum)

Then 10 points are added to your application.

For Nigerian professional couples — common in IT, engineering, and healthcare — this bonus is often the margin between receiving a 190 invitation and another year in the pool. Both spouses need valid skills assessments, so start both processes simultaneously.

If you are single, you receive 10 points automatically at the Proficient or above English level under the "Partner Skills" component (the alternative calculation for single applicants under 45 with no partner).

Community Language and Other Bonuses

For most offshore Nigerian applicants, none of these apply.

A Realistic Nigerian Profile

Consider a 29-year-old Nigerian software engineer:

• Age 25-32: 30 points
• Superior English (PTE 79): 20 points
• 8 years experience, ACS deducts 2 years = 6 years claimed: 15 points
• Bachelor's in Computer Science: 0 (standard undergraduate)
• No Australian study: 0
• Applying with spouse (under 45, CS degree, Competent English): 10 points

Base score: 75 points.

With 491 regional nomination: 75 + 15 = 90 points. Well inside typical invitation rounds. With 190 state nomination: 75 + 5 = 80 points. Competitive in most states.

Without any nomination: 75 points is below current 189 cutoffs.

How to Close the Gap

If your calculated score is below 75 points, the levers are:

1. Resit the English test to achieve Superior (20 points) if you currently have Proficient (10 points)
2. Apply for 491 regional nomination to add 15 points
3. Get your spouse's skills assessed if they have a relevant qualification
4. Verify whether your occupation has additional experience points you haven't claimed (overseas employment in your nominated occupation counts, including NYSC placements at professional level)
