IELTS Requirement for Australia Student Visa 2026: The Scores You Actually Need

Few things are more expensive than sitting an IELTS exam four times because you did not understand exactly what score you needed and when you needed it. The English language requirements for Australian student visas and their downstream pathways are not a single number — they are a layered structure that changes at each stage of your migration journey, and each stage has different timing constraints.

Understanding the full picture before you book your test saves money, saves time, and prevents the particularly painful scenario of passing the student visa threshold but then finding your English score is not valid for the 485 application you lodge three years later.

The Student Visa (Subclass 500) IELTS Requirements

For mainstream higher education enrollment (Bachelor's, Master's, Graduate Certificate):

• Minimum: IELTS 6.0 overall (or equivalent PTE Academic 50+, TOEFL iBT 64+, Cambridge C1 Advanced 169+, OET B in all four skills)

For students enrolling in an ELICOS (English language course) before their principal academic course:

• Minimum: IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent)

For university foundation or pathway programs that include an English language component:

• Minimum: IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent)

These are the minimum thresholds. Your actual institution may require higher scores — many universities require IELTS 6.5 overall for direct entry into Bachelor's programs, and IELTS 7.0 for some postgraduate degrees. Always check your institution's specific entry requirements separately from the visa minimums.

The student visa uses the score achieved at any time prior to lodgement — there is no recency requirement for the initial Subclass 500 application unless your test result is very old. However, test results older than two years may be viewed sceptically by institutions.

The 485 Temporary Graduate Visa IELTS Requirement

This is where many students are caught off guard. The 485 Temporary Graduate Visa requires a significantly higher English score than the student visa:

• Minimum: IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 5.5) — or equivalent PTE 58+, TOEFL iBT 79+, Cambridge 185+, OET B in all four skills

The 6.5 threshold applies to all streams of the 485 visa as of the 2026 regulatory framework.

Critical recency rule: your English test results must have been achieved within the 12 months immediately preceding your 485 lodgement date. Not within two years. Not during your time at university. Within the last 12 months.

This rule was tightened to prevent students from relying on a pre-arrival test result taken four or five years earlier. The practical consequence: if you graduated from a three-year Bachelor's degree and plan to lodge your 485 promptly after graduation, your pre-arrival IELTS 6.0 score is not valid for the 485 application. You need to retake the test during your final year — and achieve at least 6.5 overall.

Many students retake their English test in their second-to-last semester, giving themselves time to resit if the first attempt falls short.

The Migration Points English Thresholds

Once you are on a 485 visa pursuing PR, English proficiency is both a visa requirement and a points accumulator. The SkillSelect points test distinguishes between three tiers:

The "each band" requirement is strict — if you score IELTS 8.5 overall but one individual band (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) is 7.5, you claim Proficient English (10 points), not Superior English (20 points). The lowest individual band score determines your classification.

ANMAC English Requirements for Nurses

Nurses face a distinct, stricter English threshold administered by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) for skills assessment purposes, independent of visa requirements:

• Minimum: PTE Academic 65 with no score below 65 in any component (not the general IELTS equivalent)
• In IELTS terms, approximately IELTS 7.0 with no band below 7.0

This is stricter than the 485 visa English requirement. A nurse who passes the 485 visa threshold at IELTS 6.5 may not meet ANMAC's skills assessment standard.
