SKCK for Australia Visa: Polri Super App, Apostille, and What WNI Applicants Often Get Wrong
The SKCK is the last document most Indonesian applicants think about — and the one that most frequently causes delays. A police clearance that expires before your visa officer reviews your file means you submit a new one, extending your processing time by 1 to 3 months. Getting this right requires knowing which SKCK level to obtain, when to apply, and whether to apostille it.
Which SKCK Level for an Australian PR Visa
SKCK (Surat Keterangan Catatan Kepolisian) can be issued at multiple levels of the Indonesian National Police (POLRI):
- Polsek (Sub-district Police): lowest level, limited database scope, not appropriate for international migration
- Polres (City/Regency Police): covers the local jurisdiction, accepted for some domestic purposes
- Polda (Provincial Police): covers the province
- Mabes Polri (National Police Headquarters): national database search, the highest level
For an Australian permanent residency visa application, you need the Mabes Polri level. The Department of Home Affairs expects police clearances that cover your full national criminal record, not just a local jurisdiction. Provincial-level certificates may be accepted in some cases, but Mabes Polri provides the most unambiguous coverage and is the standard recommended for all international migration purposes.
Mabes Polri is located at Gedung Presisi II, South Jakarta. Physical visits are possible but pre-registration online significantly reduces wait time.
Obtaining the SKCK via the Presisi Super App
The process has been substantially digitised since 2024 through the Presisi — POLRI Super App (available on Google Play and App Store).
Registration and pre-application:
- Download the app and register with your NIK (KTP number)
- Submit the online SKCK application within the app
- Upload required documents: photo of KTP, Family Card (KK), birth certificate, and a valid passport
- Schedule a fingerprinting appointment at the designated Mabes Polri facility
Photo requirements for WNI (Indonesian citizens): 4x6 cm size with a red background. This is a specific Indonesian administrative requirement that differs from the white background standard used in Australian visa photos. Prepare separate photos for the SKCK and for Australian visa documentation — they have different background colour requirements.
Payment: The official government fee is IDR 30,000 to IDR 50,000. Payment via BRIVA (Bank BRI Virtual Account) through the app is recommended as it creates a verifiable payment record and avoids unofficial "facilitation fees." Third-party agents offering expedited processing charge between IDR 1,000,000 and IDR 3,000,000 for facilitation services at Mabes Polri — legal, but not required if you pre-register and attend in person.
Processing time: With pre-registration, the fingerprinting and certificate issuance process takes 15 to 30 minutes on the day. Total time from app registration to certificate in hand is typically 3 to 7 days.
Validity: The SKCK is valid for 6 months from the date of issue. This is the most important number in this entire process. Plan your timing accordingly.
If You Have Lived Abroad
If you have lived or worked in Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, or any other country for a significant period, the Australian Department of Home Affairs will require police clearances from those countries as well — not just Indonesia.
The Mabes Polri SKCK covers only your Indonesian record. For a 5-year work stint in Singapore, you need an ICA (Immigration and Checkpoints Authority) police clearance. For Japan, it is a criminal record check from the Ministry of Justice. These international clearances take significantly longer than the Indonesian SKCK — typically 4 to 12 weeks for overseas clearances — and should be started well before you expect an invitation.

The Kemenkumham Apostille: When You Need It
Since June 2022, Indonesia has implemented the Hague Apostille Convention. This replaced the previous multi-step legalization process (Ministry of Law → Ministry of Foreign Affairs → Australian Embassy) with a single apostille from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham).
Do you need to apostille your SKCK for an Australian visa? The Department of Home Affairs does not mandate apostilles on police clearances for most skilled visa applications — they accept certified copies. However, some state nomination authorities explicitly request apostilled documents to verify authenticity. If WA or SA state nomination has requested an apostilled SKCK, you need one.
For the skills assessment stage (ACS, VETASSESS, EA), apostilles on the SKCK are generally not required — assessing authorities focus on employment and academic documents.
When apostille is clearly recommended:
- If your state nomination authority requests it specifically
- If you are applying for occupations in regulated sectors (healthcare, engineering) where document fraud is a known concern and officers apply stricter checks
- As a precaution if your SKCK was issued by Polda rather than Mabes Polri, as the national-level signature database is easier for Kemenkumham to verify
The Kemenkumham Apostille Process
The apostille process is managed through the AHU Online portal (apostille.ahu.go.id):
- Create an account and log in to the portal
- Submit the document details, including the name and position of the official who signed the document (the police officer whose signature appears on the SKCK)
- Pay the administrative fee: IDR 150,000 per document
- Kemenkumham verifies the official's signature against their national database
- Collect the physical apostille sticker in person at the designated Kemenkumham Kantor Wilayah (regional office) in your province
The critical step: If the signing official's signature is not in the Kemenkumham database — which can happen with newer officers or local signing variations — the application will be rejected. In that case, you need the document re-signed by a more senior official or re-verified through the issuing institution before reapplying.
Documents That Commonly Need Apostille (Beyond the SKCK)
For Australian visa purposes, the following Indonesian documents may require apostille:
| Document | DHA Requirement | Assessing Body Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| SKCK (Police Clearance) | Recommended if state requests | Not typically required |
| Akta Kelahiran (Birth Certificate) | Not mandatory (certified copy accepted) | Case-by-case |
| Akta Nikah (Marriage Certificate) | Not mandatory | Not typically required |
| Ijazah (Degree Certificate) | Not mandatory | Case-by-case (some states request for points) |
For academic transcripts: assessing authorities like ACS and VETASSESS generally accept certified (notarised) copies with NAATI translations, without a formal apostille. However, if your institution's documents have been queried in the past, an apostille adds a layer of verification that can prevent requests for additional information.
Government fee for apostille: IDR 150,000 per document. NAATI translation for each document: approximately AUD 90 to 130 per page, depending on the translator.
The Timing Strategy
Given the 6-month validity of the SKCK, timing your police clearance around the visa application process is critical:
Do not obtain your SKCK until you have received an ITA (Invitation to Apply). The SKCK starts its 6-month clock from issuance, not from when you use it. Getting it during your EOI waiting phase risks expiry.
Once you receive an ITA, obtain the SKCK immediately — it is typically the fastest document to get (1 week) but the one most likely to expire if you experience delays elsewhere.
Check if you need overseas clearances. If you have lived abroad for more than 12 months in the past 10 years, start those clearances immediately upon receiving your ITA.
For apostille: Allow an additional 2 to 3 weeks after the SKCK is issued if you need the Kemenkumham apostille affixed.
