Software Engineer and IT Professional Migration to Australia from Pakistan

Pakistani IT professionals are among the largest cohorts attempting Australian skilled migration — and among the most likely to be surprised by their actual points score. The reason comes down to one policy: the ACS year deduction. Understanding exactly how it applies to your specific degree and experience determines whether you're looking at 80 points or 65.

The ACS Year Deduction Explained

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) conducts skills assessments for IT occupations. When you submit your application, ACS evaluates your degree and calculates a "Skill Level Requirement Met Date" — the date from which your work experience is considered to be at a skilled level. Everything before that date doesn't count toward your work experience points.

For a Pakistani software engineer with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from an HEC-recognized university, ACS typically classifies the degree as "ICT Major" and applies a 2-year deduction. This means:

  • 5 total years of experience → 3 years skilled → 5 points
  • 8 total years of experience → 6 years skilled → 10 points
  • 10+ total years of experience → 8+ years skilled → 15 points

If your degree is in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related but not directly computer science field, ACS may classify it as "ICT Minor" and apply a 4-year deduction. And if you graduated with a Commerce or Business degree despite working in IT, ACS may classify the ICT content as "Insufficient" — triggering a 6-year deduction that makes IT points nearly impossible to accumulate from offshore.

What This Means for Points in Practice

A typical Pakistani software engineer profile at age 28, with 5 years of experience and a BS Computer Science:

Points Category Score
Age (25–32 bracket) 30
Education (bachelor's degree) 15
Work experience (5 years total - 2 ACS deduction = 3 skilled) 5
English — Proficient (PTE 65+ in each) 10
Subtotal without extras 60

At 60 points, no invitation is coming. Add the points boosters:

Additional points Source
+10 Upgrade English from Proficient to Superior (PTE 79+)
+5 NAATI CCL Urdu test
+5 State nomination (190 visa)
+20 total

This brings the profile to 80 points — competitive for a Subclass 190 state nomination in Western Australia or Queensland. With a 491 regional nomination instead of 190, the +15 regional bonus brings the score to 85.

For Pakistani IT professionals at 28-30 years old with 5 years of experience, 80-85 points is the realistic target. The March 2026 SkillSelect data shows 491 invitations being issued at 85-95 points for engineering and IT occupations — making state nomination strategies (190 or 491) the primary pathway for most Pakistanis.

Occupation Selection: Software Engineer vs. ICT Analyst

Pakistani IT professionals often work across roles that span multiple ANZSCO codes. Your occupation selection for the skills assessment has downstream consequences on your visa options.

Software Engineer (261312) is on the MLTSSL — it qualifies for the 189, 190, and 491 visas. If you write code as your primary responsibility, this is typically the right code.

ICT Business Analyst (261111) and Systems Analyst (261111) are also on the MLTSSL. If your role is more focused on requirements, project management, or bridge between business and technical teams, these codes may better match your actual duties.

The critical risk: claiming a software engineering ANZSCO code when your actual duties are more analytical or management-oriented. ACS assesses your duties against the ANZSCO description using the SFIA (Skills Framework for the Information Age) framework. If your employment letters describe business analysis or project coordination tasks, ACS may issue a negative assessment under the software engineering code and require you to resubmit under a different code — costing you time and money.

Match your ANZSCO code to your actual day-to-day duties, not to the title that sounds most prestigious.

The Employment Letter Critical Requirement

ACS explicitly evaluates whether your employment evidence matches the ANZSCO description at the appropriate SFIA skill level. Employment letters from Pakistani companies — particularly software houses in Lahore's tech district, Karachi's fintech sector, or Islamabad's federal IT contractors — must describe your actual responsibilities in detail.

A letter that says "Mr. Ahmed worked as a Software Developer from 2020 to 2025" fails. A letter that describes:

  • The technologies and platforms you developed on
  • The scale and complexity of the projects you contributed to
  • Your specific role (individual contributor vs. lead vs. architect)
  • Team size and your position within it

...gives ACS the information it needs to confirm your SFIA level and approve your assessment.

If your employer is difficult to reach or has changed management, obtain the letter before you leave your current role or while your former colleagues are still accessible. Employment letters that arrive months after you've left an organization, with no corroborating bank statement or tax record evidence, are among the most common grounds for negative ACS assessments.

The Professional Year Option

If you arrive in Australia on a different visa (such as a student visa, a Subclass 482 employer-sponsored visa, or as a dependent) and want to improve your points score, the Professional Year (PY) program offers 5 additional points.

The PY is a 44-week structured program combining workplace training and professional development, offered by recognized providers in Australia. For ACS-assessed occupations, it reduces the experience deduction to zero (from the standard 2 years) for the duration that it applies, and adds 5 points to your migration score.

For offshore Pakistani applicants, the PY is not directly relevant — it requires you to be in Australia on a valid visa. But for those who've come through the student visa pathway and are now transitioning to permanent residency, it's a meaningful points booster worth factoring into timing decisions.
