K-1 Visa from Colombia: Process, Interview, and Key Requirements

Colombia sends approximately 1,863 K-1 visa recipients to the United States annually, placing it consistently in the top five source countries globally. That's a large applicant pool — and U.S. consular officers in Bogotá see patterns across thousands of cases each year. Understanding what distinguishes approved cases from denied ones, and what's specific to the Colombian process, will save you time and stress.

Embassy and Interview Location

K-1 visa interviews for Colombian nationals are conducted at the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá. There are no other U.S. consulates in Colombia that handle immigrant visa categories, so all K-1 applicants in Colombia route through Bogotá regardless of where they live within the country.

After USCIS approves your I-129F petition and the NVC processes the case (typically 4–6 weeks), you'll receive instructions from the Embassy on scheduling your medical exam and interview.

Medical Examination Requirements

The medical exam must be performed by a State Department-authorized panel physician in Colombia. There are authorized physicians in Bogotá and other major cities. The examination covers tuberculosis screening, blood tests, vaccination verification, and a general health assessment per CDC requirements.

Results are typically transmitted electronically to the Embassy. The exam costs approximately $200–$350 USD depending on the physician and any required additional tests. Schedule the exam close to the interview date but not so close that results may not be ready — aim for 2–4 weeks before the interview appointment.

Police Clearance Certificates

Colombian nationals must obtain a criminal background certificate (Certificado de Antecedentes Penales) from the Policía Nacional de Colombia. This can be requested online through the National Police website or in person at police stations. The certificate must be recent — typically no more than 6 months old at the time of the interview.

If you've lived in other countries for 6 months or more after age 16, you'll also need police clearances from each of those countries. Process these early since international record requests can take weeks.

High-Scrutiny Context

The Bogotá Embassy has historically maintained heightened scrutiny for family-based visa applications, including K-1. This isn't arbitrary — Colombia has documented patterns of visa fraud in certain categories. Consular officers are trained to look specifically for relationships that appear transactional, where the age gap is large and unexplained, communication history is thin, or where the couple has limited documented offline interaction.

This doesn't mean Colombian applicants are presumed to be fraudulent. It means the evidentiary bar is higher than at lower-scrutiny posts. Couples need a robust, chronological evidence package that tells a coherent relationship story.

Strong evidence for Colombian K-1 applicants typically includes:

  • Documented travel visits (both petitioner to Colombia and beneficiary to the U.S. if applicable), with boarding passes, passport stamps, and hotel records
  • Extensive communication logs (WhatsApp is dominant in Colombia — export full chat histories showing continuous, authentic communication over the relationship's duration)
  • Photos across multiple occasions, locations, and with family members
  • Evidence of knowledge of each other's daily lives — work history, family members' names, future plans discussed
  • For online-origin relationships: documentation of when the relationship moved offline, with specific meeting records

The interview officer will ask detailed questions. Be prepared to describe the first meeting in specific terms, explain how the relationship developed, and discuss concrete wedding plans. Vague or inconsistent answers between the petitioner and beneficiary (if both are interviewed, which can happen via phone with the petitioner) are major red flags.

Prior U.S. Immigration Issues

If your Colombian fiancé has any history of unauthorized presence in the United States — even brief overstays on tourist visas — this must be disclosed and addressed. The 3-year bar (for 180 days+ of unlawful presence) or 10-year bar (for 1+ year) activates upon departure from the U.S. to attend the K-1 interview.

If this applies to your situation, consult an immigration attorney before scheduling the consular interview. Filing an I-601 waiver proactively or understanding the waiver path before the interview prevents being caught off-guard by a denial.

Documents for the Interview

Standard K-1 interview documents for Colombian nationals include:

  • Valid Colombian passport (6 months validity beyond intended entry date)
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • Interview appointment confirmation
  • Birth certificate (registered civil copy)
  • Divorce decrees for all prior marriages (for both petitioner and beneficiary)
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Form I-134 from U.S. petitioner with supporting financial documents (recent tax returns, W-2s, bank statements, employer letter)
  • Medical exam results (if provided physically)
  • Relationship evidence portfolio

All documents in Spanish require certified English translations.

After the Interview

If approved, the visa is printed in the passport and is valid for 6 months from issuance (or from the medical exam date, whichever is sooner) for a single entry. Once you enter the U.S., the 90-day marriage clock begins. If issued a 221(g) slip (administrative processing), monitor the case status on the CEAC portal. Blue slips typically resolve within weeks; white or yellow slips indicating security checks can take several months.
