TN Visa Port of Entry: Which Border Crossing to Choose for Your Application
TN Visa Port of Entry: Which Border Crossing to Choose for Your Application
For Canadian TN applicants, choosing where to cross the border is a tactical decision. The rules are the same everywhere — but officer familiarity with specific profession categories varies, wait times differ significantly, and the practical consequences of a denial differ between land borders and airport preclearance.
Here's what you need to know to choose the right crossing.
Land Border vs. Airport Preclearance: The Core Trade-Off
Land border crossings (Peace Bridge, Ambassador Bridge, Peace Arch, etc.) let you drive to the crossing, present your documents in secondary inspection, and drive back to Canada if denied. The cost of a problem is a wasted afternoon and the need to reapply.
Airport preclearance (Toronto Pearson, Vancouver International, Montreal-Trudeau) processes your TN before you board. If approved, you board and fly. If denied, you're still in Canada — but you've likely missed your flight. Some applicants pay change fees, others book refundable tickets specifically for first-time TN applications.
The functional difference: at a land border, a denial means a drive home. At airport preclearance, a denial means a missed flight and rebooking fees on top of fixing your application.
For first-time applicants in profession categories with any ambiguity — Computer Systems Analyst, Management Consultant, Scientific Technician — many experienced travelers recommend a land border crossing specifically because the consequences of a problem are more manageable.
High-Traffic TN Crossings and Their Characteristics
Detroit-Windsor Tunnel / Ambassador Bridge (MI)
Widely regarded as one of the most experienced crossings for technical and engineering TN applications. Officers here have processed large volumes of tech and manufacturing TN applications from Ontario's engineering and tech corridor.
The tunnel and bridge connect Windsor, Ontario to Detroit, Michigan. Detroit is a major destination for tech workers relocating to Midwest employers, and the volume of TN applications has built officer familiarity with the nuances of CSA vs. Engineer distinctions.
Good for: Computer Systems Analyst, Engineer, Management Consultant first-time applications.
Blaine Peace Arch (WA)
The primary crossing for West Coast tech workers relocating to Seattle, San Francisco, or other Pacific tech hubs. Blaine processes a high volume of tech TN applications from BC and Alberta.
Reports from r/tnvisa users (2025) indicate generally consistent adjudication for both CSA and Engineer categories, though scrutiny has increased for applications where the degree and profession category alignment is unclear.
Good for: Tech workers heading to Pacific Northwest or California employers.
Buffalo-area Crossings (Peace Bridge, Rainbow Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston)
High-volume crossings with significant TN traffic from Ontario and Quebec applicants. These crossings process the highest absolute number of TN applications of any land corridor.
In recent years (2024–2026), there have been more reported denials at these crossings for technical roles — particularly CSA applications that appear to be developer roles, and Engineer applications with CS degrees. This isn't a policy difference from other crossings; it likely reflects individual officer practices at high-volume stations.
Some experienced TN applicants specifically avoid the Peace Bridge for borderline categories and choose the Ambassador Bridge or a preclearance airport instead.
Generally fine for: Clear-category professions (Accountant, Registered Nurse, Pharmacist, Economist). Higher risk for: Edge-case tech applications in the CSA/Engineer space.
Toronto Pearson International (YYZ) — Preclearance
Canada's highest-volume TN preclearance processing location. Well-staffed with experienced CBP officers familiar with TN applications.
The key advantage over other airports: Pearson's preclearance facility is large and well-resourced. The key disadvantage: flight connections are tight, and a secondary inspection delay of 90+ minutes for a borderline application can mean a missed flight even if you're ultimately approved.
Book a refundable ticket or allow at least 3 hours between your scheduled preclearance arrival and departure time if applying TN for the first time at Pearson.
Vancouver International (YVR) — Preclearance
Popular for West Coast applicants. Similar characteristics to Pearson but somewhat lower volume. Generally consistent adjudication.
Tip for both airports: If your application requires significant secondary inspection time and you miss your flight, you'll need to rebook — and your approved TN is already in the system. You can board a later flight the same day with your I-94 already granted.
CBP One App Appointments
Certain high-volume land border crossings now require appointments via the CBP One app for TN processing. This is particularly relevant at some New York and Michigan crossings. Check the current appointment requirement for your intended crossing at cbp.gov before traveling — arriving without a required appointment can result in being turned away from the TN processing facility.

Practical Advice for Choosing Your Crossing
If your profession category is unambiguous (Accountant, Pharmacist, RN, Engineer with clear engineering degree) — use the most convenient crossing. Officer familiarity matters less when the application is clean.
If you're in a higher-scrutiny category (CSA, Management Consultant, Scientific Technician, Engineer with CS degree) — prioritize crossings with reported familiarity: Ambassador Bridge or Blaine Peace Arch over high-volume Buffalo crossings.
If this is a renewal with no complications — convenience is the primary factor. Land border renewals are quick for straightforward renewals.
If you have any prior denials or have a complex case — skip the border entirely and use an I-129 USCIS filing instead. Let USCIS adjudicators handle it in writing, with Premium Processing for certainty.
