H-4 EAD Renewal: Documents, Checklist, and How to File Online

Your H-4 EAD card has an expiration date that now means exactly what it says for renewals filed on or after October 30, 2025. For those filings, there's no automatic extension — when the card expires, you cannot continue working on the expired EAD. That makes the renewal filing the most consequential deadline in your immigration timeline.

Here's everything you need to file your renewal correctly and on time.

When to File Your H-4 EAD Renewal

USCIS accepts renewal applications up to 180 days before your current EAD expires. With processing times running 6-10 months in 2026, filing as soon as the 180-day window opens is the safest way to maximize the available runway.

Mark your calendar for the date that is 180 days before your EAD expiration. File as soon as that window opens. Filing even one day before the 180-day window opens can result in rejection, which wastes weeks and shortens your processing runway.

If your current EAD expires in less than 180 days and you haven't filed yet, file immediately. Every day of delay increases your employment gap risk.

Required Documents for H-4 EAD Renewal

Gather these before you start the form:

Identity and status documents:

  • Copy of your passport (biographic page, must be unexpired)
  • Two recent 2×2 inch passport-style photos meeting current USCIS specifications (white or off-white background; no glasses in standard photos)
  • Current I-94 printout (download from the CBP I-94 website)
  • Copy of your current or most recent H-4 I-797 approval notice

Proof of H-4 EAD eligibility:

  • Copy of your H-1B spouse's I-140 approval notice (I-797), OR
  • Evidence of AC21 extension eligibility (PERM or I-140 filing receipts showing the qualifying matter has been pending at least 365 days)
  • Copy of your spouse's current H-1B I-797 approval notice

Marriage and prior EAD:

  • Marriage certificate (with certified English translation if not in English)
  • Copy of your current/previous EAD card (front and back)

Form and fees:

  • Completed Form I-765 (current edition 08/21/25), category (c)(26)
  • Filing fee: $470 online / $520 paper

Missing even one document can trigger a Request for Evidence that adds weeks or months to your processing time — time you may not have.

How to File Your H-4 EAD Renewal Online

Online filing through your USCIS account is the fastest path:

  1. Log into your USCIS account (or create one at my.uscis.gov)
  2. Select "File a form online" and choose Form I-765
  3. Complete each section — Part 2, Item 27 must say (c)(26)
  4. Upload digital copies of all supporting documents (PDF or JPEG)
  5. Pay the $470 filing fee by credit or debit card
  6. Submit and save your confirmation number

Online filing gives you instant confirmation, lower fees ($470 vs $520), and easier status tracking. You can also link your case to your account for real-time updates.

For paper filing, mail the form, documents, photos, and a payment method permitted by the current I-765 instructions to the USCIS lockbox address listed for your filing. Form G-1450 may be used for card payment and Form G-1650 for ACH payment where permitted.

Timing Strategy: The Bundled Filing Advantage

If your H-1B spouse's status extension is coming up around the same time, coordinate filings according to the current instructions for each form. Where permitted, submit the I-129 (H-1B extension), I-539 (H-4 extension), and I-765 (H-4 EAD) together. While USCIS is no longer required to adjudicate these concurrently, it may bundle them as a courtesy when the H-1B uses premium processing.

The I-129 premium service provides a 15-business-day action commitment for the eligible H-1B petition. It does not guarantee that the H-4 or EAD will be adjudicated in that window; the EAD may remain in the 6-10 month standard queue.

The H-4 EAD Career Continuity Toolkit includes a renewal countdown calendar, pre-filled document checklist, and bundled filing strategy guide designed specifically for the post-auto-extension environment.
