Your H-4 EAD card has an expiration date that now means exactly what it says for renewals filed on or after October 30, 2025. For those filings, there's no automatic extension — when the card expires, you cannot continue working on the expired EAD. That makes the renewal filing the most consequential deadline in your immigration timeline.

When to File Your H-4 EAD Renewal

USCIS accepts renewal applications up to 180 days before your current EAD expires. With processing times running 6-10 months in 2026, filing as soon as the 180-day window opens is the safest way to maximize the available runway.

Mark your calendar for the date that is 180 days before your EAD expiration. File as soon as that window opens. Filing even one day before the 180-day window opens can result in rejection, which wastes weeks and shortens your processing runway.

If your current EAD expires in less than 180 days and you haven't filed yet, file immediately. Every day of delay increases your employment gap risk.

Required Documents for H-4 EAD Renewal

Gather these before you start the form:

Identity and status documents:

• Copy of your passport (biographic page, must be unexpired)
• Two recent 2×2 inch passport-style photos meeting current USCIS specifications (white or off-white background; no glasses in standard photos)
• Current I-94 printout (download from the CBP I-94 website)
• Copy of your current or most recent H-4 I-797 approval notice

Proof of H-4 EAD eligibility:

• Copy of your H-1B spouse's I-140 approval notice (I-797), OR
• Evidence of AC21 extension eligibility (PERM or I-140 filing receipts showing the qualifying matter has been pending at least 365 days)
• Copy of your spouse's current H-1B I-797 approval notice

Marriage and prior EAD:

• Marriage certificate (with certified English translation if not in English)
• Copy of your current/previous EAD card (front and back)

• Filing fee: $470 online / $520 paper

How to File Your H-4 EAD Renewal Online

Online filing through your USCIS account is the fastest path:

1. Log into your USCIS account (or create one at my.uscis.gov)
2. Select "File a form online" and choose Form I-765
3. Complete each section — Part 2, Item 27 must say (c)(26)
4. Upload digital copies of all supporting documents (PDF or JPEG)
5. Pay the $470 filing fee by credit or debit card
6. Submit and save your confirmation number
