Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) and Express Entry

If your CRS score is sitting below 470 and the federal pool feels unwinnable, Alberta might be your shortest path to an ITA. The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) runs Express Entry-linked draws that have selected candidates with scores as low as 300 — well below what any general or CEC-specific federal draw has required in recent years. A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score, which functionally guarantees an ITA in the next draw.

Here's what you need to know about how AAIP works and whether you're positioned to use it.

What the AAIP Is

The AAIP is Alberta's provincial nominee program. It manages several immigration streams, but the ones most relevant to Express Entry candidates are:

• Alberta Express Entry Stream — for candidates already in the Express Entry pool who are working or have a job offer in Alberta in a targeted occupation
• Accelerated Tech Pathway — a fast-tracked sub-stream for tech workers employed by eligible Alberta tech companies

Both streams operate as "enhanced" PNP streams, meaning they are directly linked to your Express Entry profile. A nomination from Alberta triggers a 600-point CRS boost and an ITA at the next federal draw.

Who Can Apply to the Alberta Express Entry Stream

The core requirements are:

You must be actively working in Alberta (or have an eligible job offer in Alberta) at the time of application. You cannot apply from another province on the basis of a future intention to move. Alberta conducts its own review to determine whether your employment is genuine and ongoing.

Your occupation must be in a targeted sector. AAIP prioritizes certain industries that align with Alberta's economic needs. These have historically included technology, healthcare, construction trades, agriculture, and tourism. The specific NOC codes on the targeted occupation list shift periodically. Check the current AAIP occupations list before applying — Alberta does not select candidates whose NOC codes fall outside the active list regardless of score.

You must meet federal Express Entry eligibility. You need to be in the Express Entry pool with a valid profile — either under the CEC (if you have Canadian work experience) or under the Federal Skilled Worker Program.

You must demonstrate long-term intention to settle in Alberta. This is assessed through your employment ties, community connections, and in some cases, family in the province. Provincial nominees are expected to remain in the nominating province, and Alberta takes this seriously.

What CRS Scores AAIP Has Been Selecting

This is where Alberta stands apart from the federal pool. In 2025 and into 2026, AAIP draws under the Alberta Express Entry Stream have regularly selected candidates with CRS scores from 300 to 400 — sometimes lower for candidates in priority occupations through the Accelerated Tech Pathway. AAIP does not operate on fixed cut-off scores the way federal draws do; it invites candidates based on a combination of score, occupation, and how many nominations are available in that draw cycle.

For comparison, CEC-specific federal draws in the same period required a minimum CRS of 514. If you're at 380 with a strong Alberta employment situation, a direct federal ITA is mathematically out of reach. A provincial nomination from AAIP is not.

The 600-Point Mechanism

When Alberta nominates you, IRCC assigns an additional 600 points to your CRS score. Your score goes from, say, 380 to 980. The maximum CRS score is 1,200, so a nomination puts you above essentially any federal draw threshold. IRCC then issues you an ITA at the next draw.

This is why PNP nominations are called "golden tickets" in immigration communities — they are, functionally, a guaranteed ITA for anyone who qualifies.

The Accelerated Tech Pathway

Alberta launched the Accelerated Tech Pathway as a sub-stream targeting workers in the province's growing tech sector. Eligible applicants work for a qualified Alberta tech employer, and the processing is faster than the standard Express Entry stream. The pathway prioritizes software engineers, IT project managers, data scientists, and similar roles. Candidates have been selected with CRS scores as low as 300 in some Accelerated Tech draws.

If you work in tech in Alberta, this should be the first stream you evaluate.

Practical Considerations Before Applying

A few things worth knowing before you pursue AAIP:

The application is provincial, not federal. You apply directly to Alberta through the AAIP portal, not through IRCC. Alberta reviews your application independently and issues the nomination separately from the federal process.

You need a valid Express Entry profile first. Your profile must be active in the pool when you apply to AAIP. Alberta links your nomination to your existing profile — you can't get a provincial nomination without one.

Timing matters. AAIP draws are not scheduled on a fixed calendar the way federal draws are. They occur at Alberta's discretion, and draw frequency varies. Candidates who meet the criteria should apply and enter the stream as soon as they're eligible rather than waiting for a "better" draw cycle.

The nomination is not permanent residency. A nomination means Alberta wants you. It triggers the 600-point CRS boost and leads to an ITA, after which you still need to submit a full PR application to IRCC. The nomination doesn't replace that process.
