Canada Job Offer and LMIA for Express Entry: What Nigerian Applicants Need to Know

Canada Job Offer and LMIA for Express Entry: What Nigerian Applicants Need to Know

A valid job offer in Express Entry is worth 50 or 200 additional CRS points — enough to push a mid-400s profile well past the draw cut-off. For Nigerian applicants watching draws in the 500s range, the appeal is obvious. But the mechanics of getting a recognized job offer from Nigeria are more constrained than most guides acknowledge, and the most common method — a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) — is rarely accessible to applicants who have not yet set foot in Canada.

What an LMIA Is and Why It Matters

A Labour Market Impact Assessment is a document issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to a Canadian employer, confirming that no qualified Canadian citizen or permanent resident was available to fill a specific position. When an employer completes an LMIA for a foreign worker, they can then issue that worker a formal job offer that counts in Express Entry.

Without an LMIA (or an LMIA-exempt category), a job offer from a Canadian employer does not generate CRS points. The offer letter from a company saying "we'd love to hire you" has no value in the Express Entry system unless the employer has completed the LMIA process or qualifies for an exemption.

How Many CRS Points Does a Job Offer Add?

NOC TEER Level of Offered Job CRS Points Added
TEER 00 (Senior management — "00" codes) 200 points
TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 (all other eligible occupations) 50 points

TEER 4 and 5 job offers do not add CRS points, even with a valid LMIA.

The 50-point boost is the realistic scenario for most Nigerian professionals — engineers, IT specialists, nurses, accountants, teachers, and financial analysts. A 200-point offer is limited to senior management roles (e.g., VP Finance, Director of Operations) and is unusual for applicants applying from outside Canada.

The LMIA Challenge for Applicants in Nigeria

The LMIA process requires the Canadian employer to:

  1. Advertise the job position in Canada for a minimum period
  2. Document that no qualified Canadian applied
  3. Pay an LMIA processing fee of $1,000 CAD per position
  4. Submit an application to ESDC

From the employer's perspective, this is a significant administrative and financial investment. Most Canadian employers will not undertake this process for an applicant they have never met or interviewed in person. The LMIA pathway is most accessible to Nigerian applicants who:

  • Already know a Canadian employer personally (diaspora connections, alumni networks, professional associations)
  • Have been recruited through international job fairs or sector-specific recruitment programs
  • Are applying for a healthcare role in provinces actively recruiting internationally, such as Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, or Manitoba

If you are applying cold from Lagos with no Canadian employer connection, obtaining an LMIA is unlikely. The more realistic path is to enter Canada first — on a work permit through a PNP pathway, or on a PGWP — and secure a job offer once you are already in Canada. At that point, some LMIA-exempt categories also become available.

LMIA-Exempt Job Offers

Certain job offers do not require an LMIA but still add CRS points. These include:

  • Intra-company transfers: If you work for a multinational company with a Canadian office, and you are transferred to that office, you may qualify for an LMIA-exempt offer under international agreements
  • International agreements: Certain trade agreements create LMIA-exempt categories for specific nationalities and professions
  • Significant benefit to Canada: Researchers, artists, and certain athletes may qualify

For most Nigerian professionals in engineering, finance, IT, and healthcare, these categories are narrow. The intra-company transfer route is the most practically accessible — if your current employer in Nigeria operates a Canadian division, this is worth investigating seriously.

Using a PNP Instead of an LMIA

The most underutilized CRS boost available to Nigerian applicants is not the LMIA-backed job offer — it is a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination, which adds 600 CRS points and guarantees an ITA. Several PNP streams do not require a job offer at all; they nominate candidates directly from the Express Entry pool based on their occupation and CRS profile.

Provinces actively nominating Express Entry candidates include:

  • Ontario: Ontario Human Capital Priorities stream (draws directly from the Express Entry pool, no employer required)
  • British Columbia: BC Skills Immigration Tech Pilot (focused on technology occupations)
  • Alberta: Alberta Express Entry Stream
  • Nova Scotia and Manitoba: Active international healthcare recruitment programs for nurses and care workers

If your CRS score sits in the 430–480 range, a PNP pathway is often more accessible than spending months pursuing an LMIA that may never materialize.

Red Flags: Job Offer Fraud in Nigeria

The Nigerian immigration market has a specific scam category: fraudulent job offers. Agents operating in Nairaland forums and Telegram groups sell forged LMIA letters and fabricated employer offer letters, often for fees ranging from ₦200,000 to ₦1,000,000.

IRCC verifies every job offer claimed in an Express Entry application. The Employer Portal shows IRCC the employer's actual LMIA number, the position details, and whether the offer is still active. A forged letter is detected almost immediately. The consequence is a five-year misrepresentation ban — not just for the specific application, but for all future applications to Canada.

If someone offers to "arrange" a Canadian job offer for you without you having gone through an actual job interview and offer process, do not proceed. There is no legitimate service that sells LMIA-backed job offers.

For most Nigerian applicants, the highest-leverage move is not pursuing a job offer but maximizing the CRS points available through education, language testing, and PNP pathways. The Nigeria to Canada Express Entry Guide covers the full CRS optimization strategy for Nigerian profiles, including which provinces are currently drawing from the pool at scores where Nigerian applicants are competitive.
