Civil Documents for Canada Immigration from Bangladesh: Passport, Nikah Nama, and Birth Certificates
Civil documents — passport, marriage certificate, birth certificates for children, divorce decrees if applicable — form the identity foundation of every Express Entry application. For Bangladeshi applicants, each of these documents has its own procurement logic, and several have Bangladesh-specific wrinkles that generic immigration guides do not address.
Start collecting these documents well before your ITA. Some take weeks to obtain through Bangladesh's government offices.
Passport Validity
Your passport must be valid for the duration of your Express Entry application and for several years beyond your expected arrival in Canada. As a practical rule: if your passport expires within 18 months, renew it before submitting your Express Entry profile.
Bangladesh issues both E-Passports (electronic, biometric chip) and older Machine-Readable Passports (MRP). IRCC accepts both, but an E-Passport provides cleaner biometric data and is the standard now issued by the Department of Immigration and Passports (DIP).
Passport renewal process:
- Apply online at the DIP portal (epassport.gov.bd) or visit a DIP regional office
- Submit the online application, pay the fee (varies by processing speed — standard vs. express)
- Attend in-person biometric collection at your local DIP office
- Standard processing is 15-21 working days; express takes 7-10 working days
If you are currently residing abroad and need a passport renewal for Canada immigration purposes, contact the Bangladesh High Commission or Consulate in your country of residence.
Important: All documents you submit to IRCC — including your reference letters, police clearance, and bank letters — must reference the same passport number (the one in your active Express Entry profile). If you renew your passport during the application process, update your IRCC profile and inform any agencies holding documents linked to your old passport number.
Birth Certificate for Canada Immigration
IRCC requires a birth certificate for every person on your application — the principal applicant, spouse, and dependent children. For Bangladeshis, this means the digital birth registration certificate issued by the relevant City Corporation or Union Parishad.
Key requirements:
- The certificate must show your full name, date of birth, and parents' names
- It must be in English or accompanied by a certified English translation
- It must be verifiable — IRCC may cross-reference with Bangladesh's digital birth registry
Obtaining or replacing a Bangladesh birth certificate:
If you were registered at birth: visit the relevant city corporation (Dhaka North or Dhaka South City Corporation, Chittagong City Corporation, etc.) or access the online portal (bdris.gov.bd) to print a digital certificate.
If your birth was never formally registered: you can register as an adult through the local municipality. This is more common for older applicants from rural areas where registration was not systematic. You will need witnesses (parents, or family members) and supporting documents (school leaving certificate, NID) to establish your birth date.
The digital birth registration system in Bangladesh is nationally linked. City corporation offices can verify and print certified copies. Bring your NID and any existing documentation when requesting.
Nikah Nama: Marriage Certificate for Canada PR
Muslim marriages in Bangladesh are registered through a Kazi (marriage registrar) who issues the Nikah Nama — the formal marriage contract and registration document. This is the primary civil marriage document for Muslim Bangladeshi couples.
IRCC requires the Nikah Nama as proof of marriage for the spousal relationship in your application. The document must be:
- Authentic — the original or a certified copy issued by the registration office
- Translated — the Nikah Nama is in Bengali/Arabic; it must be accompanied by a certified English translation
- Verifiable — marriage registration records are maintained at the district/local government level
Getting a certified copy of your Nikah Nama:
If you have the original Nikah Nama document from your wedding, you may be able to use it directly (with translation). If the original was lost, contact the Kazi who performed the marriage — they maintain registration records by date and volume number.
Alternatively, contact the local Union Parishad or Pourashava (municipality) office where the marriage was registered. Registration volumes are maintained at the sub-district level.
Certified English translation:
Use a professional certified translator — a member of a recognized translators' association or someone whose credentials IRCC would recognize. Translation agencies in Dhaka that serve immigration clients are familiar with the Nikah Nama format. The translation should include all fields: names of bride and groom, date, Kazi's details, witnesses, mahr (dowry) amount if listed, and any conditions.

Marriage Certificate Attestation (for Non-Muslim Marriages or Additional Documentation)
For Hindu, Christian, or civil marriages registered under the Special Marriage Act, the marriage certificate is issued by the relevant religious or civil authority and follows a different format. The attestation process is similar: obtain the original or certified copy, have it translated to English if in Bengali, and ensure the authority's seal and signature are clear and verifiable.
For Muslim marriages, the Nikah Nama does not typically require Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) attestation for Canadian immigration purposes (unlike some other countries). The original document with a certified translation is usually sufficient. However, if a visa officer has concerns about document authenticity, MoFA attestation adds a layer of verification.
MoFA attestation in Dhaka is done at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building (Old DOHS, Mohakhali). The process involves submitting the original document with photocopies, paying a fee, and collecting after 2-5 working days.
Divorce Documents (If Applicable)
If either the principal applicant or spouse was previously married, IRCC requires documentation of all prior marriages and their dissolution:
- Previous Nikah Nama(s)
- Divorce deed or court decree confirming legal dissolution
- Certified English translation of all documents
This is a commonly overlooked requirement. IRCC is thorough in verifying civil status for the spousal relationship. An undisclosed prior marriage discovered during background checks is grounds for misrepresentation — a five-year ban from Canadian immigration.
The Bangladesh to Canada Express Entry Guide includes a civil documents checklist organized by document type, with translation standards, the attestation process, and common substitutes accepted when original documents are unavailable.
Organizing Your Civil Documents Package
Civil documents for Express Entry should be compiled in a dedicated folder, separate from employment and financial documents. For each document, maintain:
- The original or certified copy
- The certified English translation (if the document is in Bengali or Arabic)
- Any attestation page from MoFA or the issuing authority
IRCC's document checklist for Express Entry applications lists civil documents explicitly. Missing or non-compliant civil documents result in requests for additional information, which pause processing and consume time from your application timeline.
Getting these documents sorted early — ideally in the six months before you expect an ITA — removes one category of stress from the 60-day post-ITA window entirely.
