Express Entry CRS Score for India in 2026: Cutoffs, Category Draws, and What to Do

Your CRS score is in the 440s or 480s and you are wondering whether it is competitive enough. The honest answer is: it depends on which draw you are targeting. General draws have been in the 520-540 range in 2026. Category draws for STEM have cleared around 480-500. Healthcare draws have been in the 440-470 range. French-language draws have been in the 380-420 range.

There is no single "minimum CRS score" for Express Entry. There are multiple cutoffs depending on the stream, and the right strategy depends on which one you can realistically target.

Why General Draw Cutoffs Are Largely Irrelevant for Most Indian Applicants

General or "all-program" draws invite candidates with the highest CRS scores regardless of occupation. In 2026, these draws have been in the 520-540 range. Reaching that range without Canadian work experience requires an exceptional profile: a master's-degree equivalent, strong language scores, and usually age 20-29, alongside other CRS factors.

For the majority of Indian applicants — a B.Tech or MBA holder in their late 20s to mid-30s with good English and several years of work experience — the general draw pool is not the primary target. The category-based draws are.

Category Draw Cutoffs in 2026: What They Mean for Indian Applicants

IRCC now runs most of its draws as category-based selections targeting specific occupational groups. The cutoffs differ significantly:

STEM occupations: Draws have cleared between 480 and 500 in 2026. The current category focuses on eligible cybersecurity and selected engineering/technology occupations; generic software-engineer, data-scientist, or IT-manager titles are not enough. Check the current IRCC list and map your actual duties to the correct NOC before relying on this draw.

Healthcare occupations: These draws have been in the 440-470 range in 2026, making this one of the more accessible category-based routes. Registered nurses (NOC 31301), pharmacists, physiotherapists, and medical laboratory technologists qualify. The challenge for Indian healthcare professionals is degree equivalency — you still need your credentials evaluated and, in most cases, a licensing pathway in your target province.

Trades occupations: A 2026 trades draw issued 3,000 ITAs at a CRS of 477. This covers electricians, plumbers, and other eligible construction, industrial, and maintenance trades.

French-language proficiency: These draws have generally been in the 380-420 range. Even CLB 7 in French alongside a strong English score can qualify. For an Indian applicant currently at 460 who cannot wait for STEM draws, French language study is a strategic path to a competitive category score.

What to Do if Your CRS Is 440

A score of 440 is below the STEM category cutoff and far below general draws. Your realistic options are:

Option 1: Language score improvement. If your current score is based on CLB 8 across the board (IELTS 6.5/6.5/7.5/6.5 in R/W/L/S), moving to CLB 9 (7.0/7.0/8.0/7.0) can add up to 32 CRS points across all four abilities for a single applicant. That takes you from 440 to roughly 472, below the 480-500 STEM range but closer to it. Retaking the language test is the fastest CRS improvement available to most people.

Option 2: Spousal points. If you are married and your spouse has not submitted a language test, adding a CLB 7 spouse score adds points through the "spouse or common-law partner" component. A spouse's CLB 9 contributes additional points. Spouse factors can contribute up to 40 CRS points in total through spouse education, language, and Canadian work experience; they are not a separate 50-point skill-transferability factor.

Option 3: PNP nomination. A provincial nomination under an Express Entry-aligned stream adds 600 points to your CRS. It usually places a candidate above the draw cutoff, but federal eligibility and an ITA still apply. Ontario and Alberta both operate Tech and STEM-related streams that draw from the federal Express Entry pool. These streams have their own requirements and limited intake windows, but for a 440-score applicant they are the most reliable path to an ITA.

Option 4: French-language draws. If you are prepared to learn French to CLB 7, you can enter a significantly lower-cutoff draw pool. Verifying your NOC code: Many Indian IT professionals are mapped to the wrong NOC code, which may or may not be included in the STEM draw eligible occupations list. A "Senior Software Developer" title is not enough to establish category eligibility; duties may fit NOC 21232 or 21222, or another code. The draw eligibility is code-specific — confirm you are using the NOC that accurately reflects your actual duties, and that it appears in the current STEM eligible list.

Securing a PNP nomination: At 480, a PNP nomination usually places you above the draw cutoff, but federal eligibility and an ITA still apply. Monitor Ontario's HCP stream (for tech workers) and Alberta's AAIP Tech pathway for intake windows.
