Express Entry Spouse Points and Education Points Explained

Your spouse or common-law partner can add up to 40 CRS points to your Express Entry score through their own education and language abilities — or cost you points if you declare them as an accompanying dependent without strong credentials. Understanding how spousal and education points interact helps Filipino couples maximize their combined score.

How Spouse or Common-Law Partner Points Work

When you have an accompanying spouse, the CRS scoring changes in two ways:

1. Your own maximum points decrease — from 500 (single) to 460 (with spouse) in the core human capital section
2. Your spouse can contribute up to 40 points through their own language and education scores

Spouse education points:

Spouse language points (CLB 9+ in each skill): Up to 20 points for first official language, 5 points for second official language.

The "Non-Accompanying Spouse" Strategy

If your spouse has weak English skills or only a high school education, you may score higher by declaring them as a non-accompanying dependent rather than an accompanying spouse. When you declare no accompanying spouse, you are scored as a "single" applicant with access to the higher 500-point core maximum.

Run your CRS both ways: once with spouse points included and once without. The difference can be 20-30 points in either direction depending on your specific situation.

For Filipino professionals who graduated before 2017 (the pre-K-12 system), WES evaluations can vary. The old Philippine system had only 10 years of basic education instead of 12, which means a 4-year Bachelor's degree completed in 14 total years of schooling.

The good news: WES generally evaluates degrees from CHED-accredited institutions as equivalent to a Canadian 4-year Bachelor's degree, even for pre-K-12 graduates. However, some technical diplomas or vocational programs may only receive a "two-year" or "three-year" evaluation if credit hours are insufficient.

If your WES evaluation comes back lower than expected:

• A Philippine Master's degree is generally evaluated as a Canadian Bachelor's, recovering lost points
• Two credentials combined (e.g., a Bachelor's plus a post-graduate diploma) can score 119-128 points — sometimes higher than a single Bachelor's evaluation

Maximizing Combined Spousal Education Points

For Filipino couples where both partners have Bachelor's degrees:

1. Have the higher-scoring partner (better language, younger age, more work experience) be the primary applicant
2. Get a WES evaluation for the spouse's degree as well — those 7-10 spouse education points are often the margin
3. Have your spouse take the IELTS or PTE Core. Spouse language points (up to 20) are the highest-value spousal contribution

A common Filipino scenario: a nurse (primary applicant) with a BSN and CLB 9, married to a teacher with a 4-year education degree and CLB 7. The nurse should be primary. The teacher's degree adds 7-8 spouse education points, and their CLB 7 language scores add up to 10 more spouse language points.

Cross-Over Education Points (Skill Transferability)

Beyond the base education score, the CRS awards "skill transferability" bonus points when education combines with other factors:

• Education + language (CLB 7+): up to 50 additional points
• Education + Canadian work experience: up to 50 additional points

These cross-over points can total 100 extra CRS points on top of your base education score, making a Bachelor's degree plus strong English worth far more than the education column alone suggests.

Should Your Spouse Get a WES Evaluation?

The WES ECA costs approximately CAD 220. For spouse education points, it is worth the investment if:

• Your spouse has a Bachelor's degree or higher (7-10 CRS points)
• You are using the "with spouse" scoring path (i.e., your spouse is accompanying you)
• Those 7-10 points would push you above a draw cut-off

It is not worth it if:

• Your spouse has only a high school diploma (2 points — unlikely to justify the CAD 220 cost)
• You score higher as a "single" applicant (non-accompanying spouse path)
• Your CRS is already 50+ points above the target draw cut-off

Run the CRS calculation both ways before committing to a spouse WES evaluation. Many Filipino couples find that the primary applicant's score as a "single" exceeds the combined score with spouse — especially when the spouse has lower language scores.

Common Filipino Education Complications

Three-year diploma programs: Some Philippine colleges offer 3-year diploma programs (not 4-year Bachelor's degrees). WES typically evaluates these as "three-year post-secondary credential" — worth 8 spouse education points, or 98-112 primary applicant education points depending on single/spouse status.

Graduate units without degree completion: If you completed coursework toward a Master's degree but did not finish the thesis, WES evaluates only your completed degrees. Unfinished graduate work adds no CRS value.

Professional licenses (PRC): Your PRC license (nursing, engineering, CPA) is not factored into the WES education evaluation — only your academic degree matters for CRS. However, the PRC license is valuable for provincial licensing after you land in Canada.
