How to Apply for Canada PR from India — Complete Express Entry Process in 2026

The Process at a Glance

Applying for Canadian permanent residency through Express Entry from India takes 12-18 months. Current adult federal fees are CAD $1,590 (about ₹99,296 at ₹62.45/CAD; effective April 30, 2026), excluding settlement funds; ECA, language-test, medical, biometrics, and PCC costs are additional. The process has six phases, and running them in parallel instead of sequentially saves 2-3 months.

Phase 1: Preparation (Months 1-3)

Get your Educational Credential Assessment (ECA). This proves to IRCC that your Indian degree has a Canadian equivalent. The choice between WES (7-35 business days, strict on 3-year degrees) and IQAS (15-20 weeks, more generous with 3-year B.Com/B.A./B.Sc degrees) is strategic and depends on your specific degree type, university, and NAAC accreditation grade.

Take your English language test. Target CLB 9 minimum. Choose between IELTS (human-graded, ₹16,250-₹17,000), PTE Core (AI-graded, ₹14,500-₹15,500, better for those stuck at IELTS Writing 6.5), or CELPIP (computer-based with spell-checker, limited centres in India).

Prepare employment reference letters. If your employer (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL) refuses the detailed letter IRCC requires, build the Alternative Evidence Package: colleague reference letter on plain paper, financial audit trail using Form 16 and salary slips, and a Letter of Explanation.

Start all three simultaneously — not sequentially.

Phase 2: Profile Creation (Month 4)

Create your Express Entry profile on the IRCC portal. Enter your ECA results, best language score, work experience details, and NOC code. Your tie-break timestamp is set on initial submission — have everything ready before you submit.

Indicate your intended province if you are targeting PNP nominations. Apply separately on the OINP, SINP, and BC PNP portals.

Phase 3: In the Pool (Months 4-8)

Wait for an ITA while optimizing your profile. Improve your language score if possible. Consider starting French (CLB 7 adds up to 50 CRS bonus points). Monitor PNP draw dates.

Phase 4: Post-ITA (60 Days)

When you receive an ITA, the clock starts. Week 1: Request the PCC at PSK if needed, schedule the medical exam, and prepare the application. Weeks 2-3: Complete medicals and gather documents. Weeks 4-6: Get bank letters, upload documents, and submit by day 55. After submission, when IRCC issues the biometrics instruction letter, book and attend VFS biometrics.

Phase 5: Processing (Months 8-16)

IRCC processes your application, runs security checks, and may request additional information. Processing times fluctuate between 4-8 months.

Phase 6: Landing

Receive your Confirmation of PR (COPR). Enter Canada before the expiry date printed on your COPR or PR visa, typically tied to medical or passport validity.
