French Language for Canada Express Entry — The Bilingual Strategy for Bangladeshi Applicants
If your CRS score is sitting between 440 and 480 and you have been watching draw after draw pass without an ITA, French language proficiency may be the highest-leverage move available to you — more than another year of work experience, and faster than completing a Master's degree.
Adding French as a second language to your Express Entry profile does two things: it adds up to 50 CRS points for bilingualism, and it qualifies you for French-language proficiency category draws where cut-offs are consistently 80–100 points lower than general draws.
Why French Works So Well for Bangladeshi Applicants
Canada introduced category-based selection in June 2023. French-language proficiency has become one of the most powerful pathways because the cut-off scores for French draws are dramatically lower than general pool draws.
In 2024, French-language category draws had cut-offs ranging from 393 to 466 points. General draws in the same period often exceeded 500. If your current CRS is 450, the French strategy can open draws you cannot reach any other way — without changing your job, your education, or your age.
The bilingual bonus itself (up to 50 additional CRS points for adequate French + English) is also stackable with your existing profile. A Bangladeshi engineer with a 460 CRS who achieves adequate French proficiency may jump to 510 — competitive for general draws on top of French-specific eligibility.
The Test: TCF Canada or TEF Canada
IRCC accepts two French language tests for Express Entry:
TCF Canada (Test de Connaissance du Français pour le Canada) — administered by Alliance Française. Assesses four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Designed specifically for Canadian immigration.
TEF Canada (Test d'Évaluation de Français pour le Canada) — also administered through Alliance Française. Similar structure to TCF Canada. Both are accepted by IRCC and produce the same CLB-equivalent outcomes.
Neither test is harder than the other in absolute terms — which one is better for you depends on the preparation materials available and your learning style. Most candidates in Dhaka prepare for TCF Canada because local course availability through Alliance Française is more structured for that exam.
Alliance Française Dhaka: The Only Place in Bangladesh
Alliance Française de Dhaka is the sole authorized provider of both TCF Canada and TEF Canada exams in Bangladesh. They operate two branches:
- Dhanmondi branch — the primary test center and French language institute
- Gulshan branch — also offers courses and may run exam sessions
French language courses at Alliance Française are available in beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Structured classes run in intensive and non-intensive formats. A candidate starting from zero French needs approximately 18–24 months to reach the B2 level — the level associated with meaningful CRS bilingual bonuses. Starting from a tourist-level A2, the timeline is 10–14 months of structured study.
The exam fees are approximately BDT 24,000 for both TCF Canada and TEF Canada (as of 2024–2025). Slots fill up — register well in advance.

What French Score Do You Need
For the bilingual bonus and French category draw eligibility, the relevant threshold is Canadian Language Benchmark 7 (CLB 7) in all four French skills. This is a moderate level of proficiency — roughly equivalent to B2 on the CEFR scale — that represents functional communication in French.
The CRS points for bilingualism:
| English + French Combination | Points Added |
|---|---|
| English CLB 9+ and French CLB 9+ | 50 |
| English CLB 9+ and French CLB 7–8 | 25 |
| English CLB 7–8 and French CLB 7+ | 25 |
Most Bangladeshi Express Entry candidates already have strong English (CLB 9+). Adding French at CLB 7 adds 25 CRS points directly, plus opens access to French-category draws with their lower cut-offs.
The Realistic Learning Path from Dhaka
Starting from no French at all:
Months 1–4: Complete A1–A2 levels at Alliance Française Dhaka. This establishes basic grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary. Expect 4–6 hours per week in class plus equivalent self-study.
Months 5–10: Complete B1 level. Conversational French and basic written expression develop here. This is often the hardest phase — progress feels slow before comprehension begins to click.
Months 11–18: B2 level. This is where TCF Canada CLB 7 becomes achievable. Supplement classroom learning with French Canadian media — Radio-Canada podcasts, Office québécois de la langue française resources, and French Express Entry community forums.
The Alliance Française curriculum is aligned with CEFR levels and the exam prep is integrated into the advanced courses. Ask specifically about TCF Canada preparation modules when enrolling.
Is the French Strategy Worth It for You
The French pathway makes sense if you meet all of the following:
- Your current CRS score is 430–490 and you are not receiving ITAs
- You have 18+ months before your planned Canada move date
- You can commit 6–8 hours per week to French study
It makes less sense if you are close to 500 CRS through other means (better IELTS, additional work experience, PNP nomination), or if your timeline is shorter than a year.
The key insight is that French is not just about the bilingual bonus — it is about accessing a parallel draw system with fundamentally different (lower) cut-offs. For Bangladeshi professionals stuck in the 440–470 range, this is often the most reliable route to an ITA.
The Bangladesh to Canada Express Entry Guide includes a CRS score optimization framework that maps which strategies give you the most points for the least time investment — including how to decide whether French study, a better IELTS retake, or a PNP approach is the right play for your specific profile.
