Learn French for Express Entry — The 50-Point CRS Arbitrage for Indian Applicants
The Most Underused CRS Booster Among Indian Applicants
CLB 7 in French as a second official language adds up to 50 CRS bonus points. It also makes you eligible for French-language draws with CRS cutoffs of 380-420 — over 100 points below general draws at 520+.
For an Indian applicant sitting at CRS 460 who cannot crack the general draw cutoff, adding French CLB 7 could push them to 510 — above most category-based draw cutoffs. Combined with STEM category eligibility, French proficiency makes an ITA almost certain.
How Realistic Is CLB 7 for an Indian Professional?
CLB 7 requires approximately B1-B2 level on the European scale. You can handle most everyday conversations, write clear structured paragraphs, and understand spoken French at a moderate pace.
For an Indian professional starting from zero French, reaching this level requires approximately 6-12 months of consistent study at 1-2 hours per day. This is significant but achievable — particularly for applicants who already speak 2-3 Indian languages plus English and have a demonstrated aptitude for language learning.
The TEF Canada Exam
The Test d'évaluation de français (TEF) is the accepted French test for Express Entry, available at Alliance Française centres across India: Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Kolkata. Cost: approximately ₹15,000-₹18,000.
| Component | CLB 7 Score | Format |

10-12 Month Study Plan
Months 1-3: Foundation. Use Duolingo or Busuu daily (30 minutes) for vocabulary and basic grammar. Watch French media with English subtitles. Focus on pronunciation — French vowel sounds are very different from Hindi and English.
Months 4-6: Intermediate. Switch to a structured course (Alliance Française A2/B1 course or online courses like Frantastique). Practice writing one paragraph per day. Start listening without subtitles.
Months 7-9: Exam preparation. Take a TEF practice test. Focus on your two weakest modules. Practice speaking with a tutor — French tutors from Africa on italki and Preply are often the most affordable.
Months 10-12: Take the TEF. If you score CLB 6 in one module, retake immediately — there is no waiting period between TEF attempts.
When French Does NOT Make Sense
If you already have a CRS of 490+ and are eligible for a STEM category-based draw, spending 6-12 months on French may not be the highest-ROI use of your time. The ROI is highest for applicants in the 440-480 CRS range who are not receiving ITAs under current draw patterns.
