How to Apply WES from India — Step-by-Step ECA Process for Express Entry
Why WES Is the Default — and When It Should Not Be
WES processes ECAs in 7-35 business days and has digital integration with IRCC, making it the fastest and most convenient option. But WES is strict with 3-year Indian degrees. A B.Com or B.Sc from a non-NAAC-A institution will likely be evaluated as a "Three-Year Bachelor's Degree" — 8 CRS points lower than a 4-year equivalent.
Before you pay the CAD $220 fee, check whether your degree type is better served by IQAS (15-20 weeks, more generous with 3-year degrees) or ICES (14-20 weeks, good for BC PNP targeting).
Step-by-Step WES Process
Step 1: Create your account at wes.org/ca and pay the fee. You receive a reference number.
Step 2: Request transcripts from your Indian university. WES requires transcripts sent directly from the university — documents you carry yourself are not accepted.
For affiliating universities (Anna University, Mumbai University, JNTU): contact the Controller of Examinations at the central university, not your individual college. Check wes.org for WES Gateway India partners that support electronic transmission. If not available, use the sealed envelope method — the university places transcripts in a sealed envelope, stamps and signs across the flap, and you courier it to WES. Fee: ₹500-₹2,000. Timeline: 2-6 weeks.
For autonomous institutions (BITS Pilani, VIT, SRM): contact the Examination Cell directly. Many have digital partnerships with WES.
For deemed universities (Manipal, Amity): contact the Registrar office. Usually faster than affiliating universities.
Step 3: Ensure you have your final degree certificate (convocation certificate) and semester-wise marksheets. Provisional certificates can cause delays.
Step 4: Verify your institution's accreditation at ugc.gov.in, naac.gov.in, and aicte-india.org before sending anything.
Step 5: Track online. If your university hasn't sent documents after 3 weeks, call the Registrar directly. A phone call in India resolves more than emails.
The 3-Year Degree Trap
WES evaluates 3-year degrees as 4-year equivalents only if the degree was earned in Division I and the institution held NAAC A grade at the time of graduation. If either condition is not met, consider IQAS instead — the tradeoff is the 15-20 week processing time, so start early.
