IELTS Score Required for Canada Express Entry — CLB 9 Strategy for Bangladeshi Applicants
Language scores are the one part of your Express Entry profile you can actually improve on a short timeline. Unlike age or education, which are fixed, IELTS scores respond to targeted preparation. For Bangladeshi applicants who are sitting between 440 and 480 CRS points and wondering how to close the gap to a competitive score, the IELTS strategy is usually the most direct answer.
The difference between CLB 8 and CLB 9 is not just a few points for language. It triggers Skills Transferability bonuses that can add 30 to 50 points to a CRS profile in one move.
What IELTS Scores You Need
For Canada's Express Entry system, language proficiency is measured using Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). The IELTS General Training is the most commonly used test for FSWP and CEC applicants.
The CLB-to-IELTS conversion for the key thresholds:
| CLB Level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CLB 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| CLB 10 | 8.5 | 8.0 | 7.5 | 7.5 |
| CLB 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 |
CLB 9 — the combination of 8.0 in Listening and 7.0 in all other modules — is the inflection point. Above this threshold, Skills Transferability factors kick in at their maximum values for education and work experience combinations. Below it, those bonuses are significantly reduced or absent.
A BUET-educated engineer with 5+ years of experience who moves from CLB 8 to CLB 9 can realistically gain 30–50 CRS points from a single improved test result. That is often the difference between a profile that sits in the pool indefinitely and one that receives an ITA within a round or two.
Where to Test in Bangladesh
The IELTS General Training is administered by the British Council and IDP in Dhaka, Chittagong, and Sylhet. In Dhaka, both organizations operate from convenient locations and run tests on multiple dates each month.
The current test fee is approximately BDT 28,450 through the British Council. IDP pricing is similar. Both offer computer-delivered IELTS, which provides faster results (3–5 business days vs. 13 days for paper-based).
For Express Entry, use IELTS General Training — not Academic. The Academic version is for university admissions, not immigration, and will not be accepted by IRCC.
The CLB 9 Gap for Bangladeshi Applicants
The CLB 9 threshold is achievable for most university-educated professionals in Bangladesh, but two modules consistently create problems: Speaking and Writing.
Reading and Listening are format-driven — with practice, most candidates can reliably score at the CLB 9 threshold once they understand how the test is structured. Speaking and Writing require a different kind of preparation because they involve open-ended production under examiner assessment, not multiple-choice recognition.
Common patterns among Bangladeshi test-takers:
- Speaking: Scores tend to drop due to limited exposure to spontaneous academic-register conversation. Candidates with strong written English often underperform in Speaking because the register expected by examiners differs from professional English used in emails or reports.
- Writing Task 2 (essays): Band 7 requires not just grammatical accuracy but coherent argument development and lexical variety. Generic essay formats taught in coaching centers sometimes produce Band 6–6.5 because the examiner is not rewarding template use.

Coaching Options in Dhaka
Several Dhaka coaching centers have developed curricula targeted specifically at the Speaking and Writing modules for Canada-bound applicants:
Mentors (Dhanmondi and Uttara locations) — well-regarded for IELTS Speaking preparation and for candidates targeting Band 7–8.
Saifur's — large-scale operation with multiple centers; useful for systematic grammar and writing practice, particularly for candidates coming from a Bangla-medium background.
Luminedge — focuses on module-specific coaching and mock tests with detailed feedback; strong track record for Writing improvement.
Most candidates benefit most from 3–6 months of structured preparation targeting their weakest modules, combined with 2–3 mock tests under real conditions to calibrate timing and stamina.
How Many Attempts Should You Plan For
One realistic attempt after 3–4 months of targeted preparation is the minimum to plan around. Many CLB 9 achievers report 2 attempts — one to understand the format and calibrate, one to execute.
If your initial score is CLB 8 (7.5 Listening, 6.5 in any module), a focused 6–8 week intervention on the failing module, followed by a single module retake (IELTS One Skill Retake), may be the fastest path to CLB 9 without sitting the full exam again.
IRCC accepts IELTS scores that are less than 2 years old at the time of ITA. Time your testing strategy so your best score remains valid through your expected ITA window.
Improving your IELTS score is the highest-ROI activity in Express Entry preparation if you are below CLB 9.
