WAEC, NECO, and NYSC Documents for WES and Canada Immigration
WAEC, NECO, and NYSC Documents for WES and Canada Immigration
Nigerian applicants often treat secondary school certificates and NYSC documents as afterthoughts — documents collected after the real work is done. In practice, WES may require your WAEC or NECO results to complete your educational credential assessment, and IRCC treats the NYSC discharge certificate as a key supporting document for work experience claims. Knowing how to obtain and present these correctly prevents avoidable delays.
Why WES Requests Secondary School Results
WES evaluates your complete educational history, not just your highest degree. For a Nigerian bachelor's degree evaluation, WES typically requests the secondary school certificate that preceded tertiary education. This serves two purposes: it establishes the legitimacy of your entry into the university program, and it provides a complete record of your academic history for the Canadian equivalency determination.
If your bachelor's degree was obtained from a Nigerian university and your secondary education was in Nigeria, WES will likely ask for your WAEC SSCE or NECO SSCE result in addition to your university transcript.
WAEC Digital Certificate: How It Works
For WAEC candidates who sat their exams in 1999 or later, the WAEC Digital Certificate platform allows electronic transmission of results directly to WES. This is significantly faster than the physical alternative and eliminates the risk of a document being lost in transit.
How to submit your WAEC result electronically to WES:
- Go to the WES WAEC Electronic Transfer page on the WES website (search "WES WAEC electronic transfer")
- Create an account on the WAEC Direct portal (waecdirect.org) using your examination year, candidate number, and other details
- Purchase the WAEC Digital Certificate from the portal — the fee is approximately ₦2,000
- On the WES WAEC transfer page, enter your WAEC examination details and your WES reference number
- WAEC transmits the result directly to WES electronically; WES confirms receipt within a few days
For candidates who sat WAEC before 1999, the digital certificate platform does not apply. These candidates must use the Scratch Card method: purchase an e-PIN Scratch Card from WAEC, provide WES with the serial number and PIN so they can access the WAEC result verification database directly. Contact WES support to confirm the exact current process, as it varies by examination year.
NECO Result Verification for WES
NECO uses a "Result Token" system rather than a digital certificate platform. To allow WES to verify your NECO SSCE result:
- Purchase a NECO Result Verification Token through the Remita payment platform at neco.gov.ng
- The token (a numeric code) is generated after purchase
- Provide the token number to WES so they can access the NECO verification system directly
The NECO verification portal allows WES to confirm the authenticity of your result without physical documents. This process is generally straightforward, though the Remita payment occasionally encounters issues with certain bank cards — have an alternative payment method ready.
If you sat both WAEC and NECO, you only need to provide one secondary school certificate for WES. WAEC is more commonly used because the electronic transfer process is more established, but either is accepted.

NYSC Discharge Certificate: What It Does in Your Application
The National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate serves multiple roles in the Express Entry application:
1. Validates your degree for WES: WES uses the NYSC discharge certificate to confirm the date your university program ended and to verify that the degree is legally complete. In Nigeria, a degree without NYSC completion (for those required to serve) is not considered a complete qualification. WES knows this and may request the NYSC certificate as supporting documentation to confirm your graduation timeline.
2. Documents work experience for CRS purposes: If the duties you performed during your NYSC service year align with a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation, that year counts as foreign work experience. You will need a reference letter from the organization where you were posted, describing your role and duties. The NYSC discharge certificate itself confirms the start and end dates of your service and shows your Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).
3. Supports the post-ITA application: IRCC may request the NYSC certificate in the post-ITA document submission as part of confirming your educational and work history.
How to Obtain Your NYSC Discharge Certificate
If you completed your service and have your original discharge certificate, you are set. Keep it in your document file alongside your degree certificate.
If your original discharge certificate is lost or damaged, NYSC issues replacements. The process involves:
- Logging into the NYSC portal (nysc.gov.ng)
- Reporting a lost certificate and submitting a police report of the loss
- Paying a replacement fee
- Biometric verification at your state NYSC secretariat
Replacement timelines vary by state. Lagos and Abuja state secretariats typically process replacements in 2 to 4 weeks. Requests in some other states take longer.
For NYSC exemption holders: If you were exempted from NYSC (age exemption, or completed a postgraduate degree that qualified for exemption), you should have an NYSC Exemption Certificate. This serves the same documentary function as the discharge certificate for WES and IRCC purposes.
Timing These Documents Against Your WES Application
Secondary school documents (WAEC or NECO) and NYSC certificates do not have validity expiration dates — a 2010 WAEC result is as valid today as it was when issued. You can initiate their procurement and submission to WES at any time, independent of your university transcript.
Because the WAEC electronic transfer is fast (typically 5 to 10 days from purchase to WES confirmation), some applicants submit WAEC early and wait for the university transcript to arrive before WES begins formal evaluation. WES will not issue your ECA report until all required documents are received, but early submission of secondary school documents means one less item to coordinate during the critical period when your university transcript is in transit.
For NYSC documentation, ensure your discharge certificate is in your file before you receive an ITA. This document is needed in the 60-day post-ITA window, and going through the NYSC replacement process during that window adds unnecessary pressure.
