PNP Streams for Skilled Trades: Alberta, BC, Ontario, and Saskatchewan in 2026
If your CRS score is below 430 and you have been waiting in the Express Entry pool without an invitation, a Provincial Nominee Program nomination changes the entire calculation. A provincial nomination adds +600 points to your CRS score — which takes any score above 67 to 667 and guarantees an Invitation to Apply in the very next Express Entry draw. For skilled tradespeople, every province with serious construction or industrial labour shortfalls has a dedicated stream. Here is the province-by-province breakdown for 2026.
Why PNP Matters for Trades Candidates
The federal Express Entry pool rewards characteristics that most tradespeople score lower on: advanced degrees, very high language scores, and age under 30. A 38-year-old electrician with CLB 7 English, a provincial certificate, and 12 years of experience might sit at CRS 450 — competitive for trades draws but not guaranteed an invitation in every cycle.
A provincial nomination moves you out of score competition entirely. Once you receive a nomination from Alberta, BC, Ontario, or Saskatchewan, your effective CRS becomes 450 + 600 = 1,050. You will receive an ITA in the next draw, period.
The trade-off: provincial streams typically require you to have existing ties to the province — usually a job offer from a provincial employer or current residence on a valid work permit. Most trades PNP streams are designed for candidates already in the province, not offshore applicants applying cold. There are exceptions, which are noted below.
Alberta: Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)
Alberta has the most aggressive trades recruitment of any Canadian province, driven by a $140 billion infrastructure and energy investment pipeline. The AAIP runs three streams relevant to tradespeople.
Alberta Opportunity Stream
This is the primary route for tradespeople already in Alberta. Requirements:
- Valid work permit in Alberta (LMIA-based or LMIA-exempt)
- Job offer from an Alberta employer in a qualifying occupation (TEER 2 or 3)
- 12 months of full-time work experience in the occupational category within the last 18 months
- Minimum language requirements (CLB 5 for most trades occupations)
In April 2026, Alberta conducted priority sector draws for construction and skilled trades with internal grid scores as low as 60 — a very accessible threshold for most employed tradespeople in the province.
Alberta Express Entry Stream
For candidates already in the Express Entry pool, Alberta can issue a notification of interest (NOI) to candidates it wishes to nominate based on its provincial scoring grid. Alberta weights its grid toward labour market demand — trades in short supply score higher. To receive an Alberta NOI, you must have an active Express Entry profile and meet the stream-specific requirements.
This stream allows offshore nominations in some cases, particularly for candidates with a valid Express Entry profile and an Alberta job offer.
Priority Sectors and Processing
Alberta prioritizes applications in Skilled Trades, Energy, and Manufacturing. Construction trades, welding, pipefitting, heavy equipment operation, and industrial maintenance mechanics are all priority occupations. Applications in these categories are processed faster and with lower score thresholds.
British Columbia: BC PNP Skills Immigration
BC rebuilt its entire immigration framework in 2026 around the "Care, Build, Innovate" pillars. The "Build" pillar is explicitly dedicated to construction and infrastructure trades.
Skilled Worker Stream (BC PNP)
The BC PNP Skilled Worker stream is available to workers in NOC TEER 2 and TEER 3 occupations with a valid BC job offer and current work authorization in BC. For trades, the key features are:
- Candidates in the nine priority construction trades (electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, HVAC mechanics, roofers, insulators, glaziers, and refrigeration mechanics) receive targeted invitations with lower BC registration scores
- The "Build" pillar fast-tracks nominations for certified workers in these trades
- Minimum language: CLB 4 for TEER 3 trades
BC conducts invitation rounds periodically, drawing from the Skills Immigration Registration System (SIRS). Candidates register and receive a score based on provincial factors. Trade workers in priority occupations compete in a lower-score pool than general applicants.
BC PNP via Express Entry
For candidates with an active Express Entry profile, BC's Express Entry BC (EEBC) stream issues provincial nominations that are processed under the enhanced 60-day federal processing standard. BC uses its own points grid (SIRS) to rank EEBC candidates before issuing nominations.
For the Build pillar trades, BC has been conducting draws at registration scores in the 60-75 range — accessible to most employed tradespeople with a BC job offer and valid work permit.

Ontario: OINP Skilled Trades Stream
Ontario operates a dedicated Skilled Trades Stream within its Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP). This stream is specifically designed for tradespeople and has several features that distinguish it from generic PNP streams:
Eligibility requirements:
- At least one year of full-time work experience in Ontario in a qualifying trade occupation within the last two years
- Currently residing in Ontario on a valid work permit at the time of application
- A valid licence or certificate from Skilled Trades Ontario (if the trade is compulsory in Ontario)
- Job offer from an Ontario employer for a trade occupation (TEER 2 or 3)
- Minimum CLB 5 language in speaking and listening, CLB 4 in reading and writing
The Ontario stream has a notable difference from Alberta and BC: it requires the candidate to already be in Ontario. This is not a stream for offshore applicants. However, for tradespeople currently in Ontario on any type of work permit — including an IEC working holiday — who have accumulated one year of Ontario trade experience, it can be the fastest route to a nomination.
Ontario's processing time for the Skilled Trades Stream has run approximately 3-6 months from application to nomination decision. A nomination triggers the Express Entry ITA in the subsequent draw.
Saskatchewan: SINP Occupations In-Demand
Saskatchewan runs a distinctive immigration strategy: it is one of the few provinces willing to nominate offshore tradespeople without a Canadian job offer in hand, under its Occupations In-Demand stream.
SINP Occupations In-Demand:
This stream allows candidates outside Canada to apply for a Saskatchewan nomination based on their occupation and points grid score. Key features:
- An active Express Entry profile is required for the Express Entry sub-category
- Skilled trade occupations score 20 points on the SINP grid for holding a trade certification from SATCC (Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission)
- No requirement to already be in Saskatchewan
- Priority processing for Skilled Trades, Energy, and Mining sectors
From 2026, Saskatchewan reserves at least 50% of its annual nominations for priority sectors including Skilled Trades. This means the pool of competing applicants for trades nominations is smaller than in other categories.
SINP Express Entry Sub-Category:
Candidates can submit a registration of interest (ROI) to SINP and, if invited, receive a provincial nomination that they then use to update their Express Entry profile. The timeline from ROI submission to nomination decision is typically 2-4 months for priority occupations.
Saskatchewan is worth considering for offshore tradespeople who do not have a Canadian job offer yet and are looking for a PNP route that does not require existing Canadian ties.
Dual-Track Strategy: Federal + Provincial
For most tradespeople, the optimal strategy in 2026 is to pursue both streams simultaneously:
- Create and maintain an active Express Entry profile (FST-eligible, with correct NOC code and certificate if obtained)
- Simultaneously apply to the most appropriate PNP stream based on your current location, job offer status, and trade
If a trades draw runs and your CRS is competitive, you get an ITA federally. If a provincial nomination comes through first, you get an ITA through the enhanced pool. Either outcome results in permanent residence.
