VFS Biometrics Appointment India for Canada: Booking, Locations & What to Bring

VFS Biometrics Appointment India for Canada: Booking, Locations & What to Bring

Once you receive your Express Entry ITA and submit your eAPR application, IRCC will send you a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL) asking you to provide fingerprints and a photograph. In India, this is handled by VFS Global. Getting the appointment, avoiding the most common error that turns people away at the door, and understanding passport submission logistics will determine whether your 60-day ITA window goes smoothly or gets eaten up by administrative re-work.

Why Biometrics Must Be Done Promptly After the BIL

Biometric enrollment is valid for 10 years once completed. If you have given biometrics for a previous Canadian visa application within the last 10 years and they are still on file, you may not need to re-enroll — IRCC will state this in your BIL. If this is your first time, or your previous enrollment has expired, the BIL will give you a deadline (usually 30 days from the letter date) to complete biometrics.

Do not treat this as a low-priority task. If your biometrics are not completed before the BIL deadline, your application can be refused.

VFS India Centre Locations for Canada

VFS Global operates ten centres across India for Canadian applications. The main hub cities with the highest capacity are:

City Location Notes
New Delhi Shivaji Stadium Metro station area Regional hub; high volume
Mumbai Mahalaxmi / Andheri East Two locations; book by preference
Bangalore Gopalan Innovation Mall, Whitefield Serves IT corridor; high demand
Chandigarh Elante Office Complex Serves Punjab, Haryana applicants
Hyderabad Madhapur Serves Telangana/Andhra tech professionals
Chennai Serves Tamil Nadu
Kolkata Serves East India
Ahmedabad Serves Gujarat
Kochi Serves Kerala
Pune Serves Maharashtra (outside Mumbai)

For biometrics only (fingerprints and photo), you can visit any VFS centre regardless of where you live in India. You are not restricted to the centre nearest your registered address.

How to Book Your VFS Appointment

  1. Go to visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/can and click "Book an Appointment."
  2. Select "Biometric Enrollment" as your service type. Do not select a full visa application service if you only need biometrics.
  3. Choose your preferred city and available date. Bangalore and Mumbai can run 1-2 weeks out during peak periods (January-March and July-August). Delhi tends to have more availability.
  4. Enter your details exactly as they appear in your passport — full legal name, date of birth, passport number.
  5. Pay the VFS service fee (approximately INR 3,000-3,500, subject to change — check current fee schedule on booking).
  6. Download and print your appointment confirmation letter.

The single most important rule: Your name and date of birth on the appointment confirmation must match your passport exactly. VFS India centres enforce this strictly. If the appointment letter reads "Arun Kumar Sharma" but your passport reads "Arun K. Sharma," you will be turned away. There is no override at the centre level. You will need to rebook — and that delay eats into your ITA window.

If your name has any variation between your Aadhaar, PAN card, and passport, use your passport spelling when booking, without exception.

What to Bring on the Day

  • Original passport (current)
  • Appointment confirmation letter (printed or on phone)
  • Biometric Instruction Letter from IRCC (the document that told you to provide biometrics)
  • Passport-size photograph (check current VFS specifications for size and background)
  • Any old passports if your VFS confirmation requests them

The biometrics process at the centre takes 20-30 minutes: fingerprint scan, digital photograph, and confirmation of identity. You will receive a confirmation receipt. Keep this — it is evidence that you completed enrollment on the required date.

Slot Scarcity in Major Cities

Bangalore and Mumbai in particular can face a shortage of available biometric slots during busy periods. Strategies that have worked for applicants:

  • Check at midnight. VFS releases new slots periodically, and they fill within hours. Checking at midnight when new availability opens increases your chances.
  • Check multiple cities. Since you can use any centre in India, expand your search. If Bangalore is fully booked for three weeks, Pune or Hyderabad may have slots within the week.
  • Check regularly throughout the day. Cancellations return slots to the queue throughout the day.

If no slots are available before your BIL deadline and you have genuinely exhausted all options, contact the VFS helpline to explain your situation and document your attempts in writing. Submit a Letter of Explanation with your application if necessary.

Passport Submission: In-Person vs. Two-Way Courier

After IRCC approves your PR application, you will receive a Passport Request (PPR) letter asking you to submit your passport for stamping. This is a separate appointment from biometrics.

For passport submission, VFS India offers two options:

In-person submission: Walk into any VFS centre during walk-in hours (separate from biometric appointments), submit your passport across the counter, and collect it once stamped. Fast if you are near a centre.

Two-Way Courier Service (recommended for out-of-city applicants): VFS charges approximately INR 1,716 for a secure tracked pickup and return service. Your passport is collected from your location, sent to the VFS centre, forwarded to the appropriate Canadian visa office for stamping, and returned. This is strongly recommended if you live more than an hour from a VFS centre or cannot take time off work.

Do not use an untracked courier for passport submission. Your passport is a critical document and needs to be in the VFS/IRCC chain of custody, not in a general courier network.

VFS Premium Lounge: Is It Worth It?

VFS India offers a Premium Lounge service (approximately INR 4,767) at select centres. This provides a more comfortable waiting area, document review assistance, and dedicated counter service.

It does not speed up IRCC processing. If your documents are already organized and you are comfortable with the process, the standard service is adequate. The Premium Lounge is useful for first-time applicants who want a quieter environment and staff assistance to confirm their document set before submission.

Tracking After Submission

Once your passport is with VFS (either in-person or via courier), you can track its status at visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/can under "Track Application" using your submission reference number. Passport stamping typically takes 2-5 business days from when VFS receives it from IRCC. Once stamped, it is returned to you via the courier service or collected in person.

VFS biometrics is one of the more straightforward steps in the Express Entry process — but the identity mismatch issue and slot scarcity in major cities have derailed timelines for enough applicants that it pays to plan ahead.
