  • TEER 1 (Professional): 25 points base
  • TEER 2 or 3 (Technical/Skilled): 10 points base
  • Senior Management (NOC "00"): additional 15 points
  • High-demand occupation (BC Labour Market Outlook): additional 10 points
  • Currently working in BC for the supporting employer: additional 10 points

That last bonus — working for the same employer who's supporting your application — can add 10 points that many candidates miss when self-calculating.

Annual Wage of the Job Offer (up to 55 points)

Wage is one of the most powerful levers in the SIRS system, especially for the "High Economic Impact" draw category:

Tech professionals earning above $125,000 can accumulate 50+ wage points alone — which is why the "Innovate" pillar targets wage level rather than occupation.

Regional District of Employment (up to 25 points)

This is where many applicants leave points on the table:

  • Metro Vancouver Regional District: 0 points
  • Area 2 (Squamish, Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack): 5-16 points
  • Area 3 (all other BC regions): 12-25 points
  • Regional Experience/Alumni Bonus: additional 10 points

Working outside Metro Vancouver can be worth up to 35 points when you combine the regional district score with the alumni bonus. For a candidate stuck at 108 points who moves their job offer to Kelowna, this swing alone could push them above the cut-off.

Human Capital Factors Breakdown (80 Points)

Directly Related Work Experience (up to 40 points)

  • 5+ years of directly related experience: 15-20 points base
  • 1 year of Canadian work experience: additional 10 points
  • Currently working in BC: additional 10 points

The "currently working in BC" bonus stacks on top of Canadian experience points for candidates already employed in the province.

Highest Level of Education (up to 40 points)

  • Doctoral or Master's degree: 17-27 points
  • Bachelor's degree: 11-15 points
  • BC post-secondary education bonus: 8 points
  • Professional designation in BC: 5 points

If you studied at UBC, SFU, BCIT, or another BC institution, the 8-point education bonus is automatic — don't forget to claim it.

Language Proficiency (up to 40 points)

What the Cut-Off Scores Actually Look Like

Cut-off scores vary by draw type:

General draws fluctuate significantly. In 2025-2026, general draw cut-offs have ranged from approximately 100 to 130+ points, depending on the allocation available in that draw period.

High Economic Impact draws — targeting the "Innovate" pillar — require high wage levels (approximately $62/hour or $125,000+/year as a competitive threshold). Candidates who meet the wage criterion may receive invitations at lower overall SIRS scores than general draws require.

Targeted sector draws (healthcare, trades) sometimes operate at lower score thresholds specifically because BC wants to prioritize those candidates.

There is no published single "minimum score" — the cut-off is the score of the lowest-ranked candidate invited in a given draw. It moves with each new draw.

How to Legitimately Improve Your Score

The two most efficient areas to target are language and location:

Language: If you tested at IELTS 6.5 overall (CLB 7), retesting to reach 7.5 (CLB 9) can add up to 10 points. The CELPIP exam is an alternative and is taken entirely online.

Location: If your employer has satellite offices or project work outside Metro Vancouver, a formal transfer or secondment can shift your regional district category significantly.

Current employer: If you're already working for your supporting employer in BC, make sure you're claiming the "currently working for supporting employer" bonus (10 points in Economic Factors) and the "currently working in BC" bonus (10 points in Human Capital). Candidates who self-calculate and miss these claim undercounting their own score.

Education documentation: If you studied at a BC institution, ensure your ECA report and your application both explicitly reference the BC education bonus.

What Happens After You Register

Registration creates a profile in the SIRS pool. Profiles are active for 12 months. During that window, BC runs periodic draws and invites the top-scoring candidates. If your score is below the cut-off, you remain in the pool until your profile expires or the cut-off drops enough to include you.

The key discipline: track draw results for your stream type, not just the headline cut-off. A general draw at 120 points tells you nothing about what Healthcare or High Economic Impact draws looked like in the same period.
